Pit Stop (what we’re calling super short, headline-free random thoughts): Wow the windshield “blind spot” ahead of the Cadillac Escalade IQ’s rearview mirror is enormous! The vehicle, like its Celestiq sibling, will feature “Ultra Cruise” semi-autonomous driving capability, leveraging cameras, radar sensors, and even LIDAR behind the windshield. That’s why you see that huge blind spot there. These are becoming more and more common on cars, though the one on the Cadillac Escalade IQ and the Celestiq are the biggest I’ve ever seen.

In nearly every vehicle I sit in the rearview mirror obstructs my view. Its directly in my sight line. I cannot use visors in a car. I cannot imagine trying to drive this thing.

Same. Make this go away. The huge A pillars and enormous rear view mirrors are bad enough. I practically have to put my head on the dash as it is to see a redlight. This isn’t helping.

Soon there will just be a large screen for a windshield and a camera outside to project the image on the screen.

Yes, you just read my mind…completely ridiculous…you’re supposed to SEE out the windshield…this blocks the view more than what is legal…this kind of stuff ruins it for everybody

Isn’t that completely illegal? If not, it should be…this is getting out of hand

I thought these acting as central pseudo-sunvisors was supposed to be great (or something), right? Didn’t Hundal have an article praising these blind spots about a month ago?

That article was about blind spots much smaller than this – basically ones that actually block out the sun above the mirror, the most difficult bit of sun to block.

I was being a bit facetious as I had also commented on that prior article joking that those windshield assemblies were just reducing greenhouse / DLO space, whereas this one ACTUALLY IS reducing greenhouse space and visibility.

People it’s called a “Windshield Notch” and you should be used to it and varying sizes by now. Call it a GigaNotch if that’s your thing. Cars have really become cell phones; competing plug standards, software, next gen useless features, button less, size increase/decrease/increase/etc, and everyone copying or trying to outdue each other without thinking if its a good idea. How long until I get a foldable EV?!?!?

Damnit. I knew the Giga prefix was contagious. I think there is a pill you can take for that.

Yes, but if your Giga lasts longer than 2 hours, consult a physician.

It looks like manufacturers have gone from gluing tablets to the dash to gluing tablets to the windshield. Progress!

Wait… is that what it’s actually going to look like? That big splotch on the windshield? Woof.

Cadillac is going to have to hire Arnold as a spokesperson to reassure everyone that it’s not a tumor.

To a rousing soundtrack from Muse, Cadillac reveals their newest vehicle, Celestiq, named as an homage to the front windshield Supermassive Black Hole.

“Pit stop” is a good name. It fits with the overall vibe and theme of “Morning Dump”.

LIDAR, or as I like to call it Lie-dar. Expensive, useless in bad weather, power hungry, and ugly.
You do you Cadillac.

Feedback on the Pit Stop format:

I would like some sort of title, even if it’s just “Pit Stop”
It blends in with the ads and I very nearly passed it by.

Fully support the idea though, sometimes the point of an article is just “hey look at this” and doesn’t need a bunch of filler. I’ll still click on it and go to the comments

just to add, I almost thought the first sentence on the homepage (mobile) was all it was. not even a clickable link, then I saw it had comments, and took three taps to finally go to the link. maybe formatting issue. not sure

I can imagine it as the bottom banner used in The Morning Dump section, except the circular graphic contains a checkered flag in the Autopian red and white contrast color scheme.

I wonder how well that will all work during lovebug season. It needs a dedicated headlight washer kinda sprayer.

I think I’d rather have some sort of radome on top like an airplane or helicopter sensor..

Can you imagine the replacement cost of that windshield?

As a tall person who often struggles with the rearview mirror blind spot on many cars, even with the seat set to the lowest setting, this is terrifying.

I already have to duck down a bit to fully see on certain intersections

I feel your pain. I’m tall and all torso so lots of lights I’m ducking down to see the signals. If my wife flips down the sun visor I feel like I lose all visibility out that side of the car.

Yeah, sun visors are nice in concept, but block too much of the road for me to use safely unless spun to the side

100% agree with this. I tested a modern Volvo wagon and I honestly have such a huge right side blind spot that I had to stop the test drive early. Their system might work well, but there’s a large area behind the rear view mirror that is completely opaque.

Can I order the ‘ADAS Delete’ RPO and avoid having a carbuncle like that on my windshield? I prefer being able to see traffic signals and overhead signs, please and thank you.

Think the next big thing will be windshield delete in favor of a big screen.
