This is definitely one of the tough things about humor. A saying I always try to keep in mind is “the failure mode of ‘clever’ is ‘asshole'”. As someone who has failed to be clever and ended up looking like an asshole more times than I care to admit, it’s definitely good to take a long, hard look at any “clever” thing you’re planning to do.
False advertising. This is a tale from in-person conversations, not the Slack. Please issue the appropriate correction as soon as practicable.
How long until members are allowed to attach images to comments? Now THAT would be something useful (and slightly prone to misuse).
Good call to keep the caption, you’re largely making yourselves the butt of the joke (not knowing who CvK is). Bald is more a descriptor than the punchline.
This is a test of the Autopian membership network. This is only a test.
If this was an actual emergency, your comments would be directed to a former website.
You guys should be hitting up Banana Boat, Coppertone and Hawaiian Tropic for sponsorships too.
Because nobody enjoys a sunburnt scalp.
Member tags? Gloveboxes? I swear, I’m away from this site for, like, four hours and y’all are up to some shenanigans!
I hope Rich Corinthian Leather types are getting a frunk.
Replying just to see if it’s real
Yep
At my age, I thought that maybe I forgot the big announcement that they were adding member tags and a ‘glovebox.’
Right? Maybe I missed the member email, but I noticed the member tags first and then saw the glovebox. I hope I don’t break the latch on it like my mom’s 2012 Accord. I didn’t break it. I just found how to get past it and get the important papers (registration, insurance documents etc.) out and into the armrest storage area. She wrecked that car three months later and my brother and I just got her (89-years-old and losing her marbles) into assisted living. She’s still asking what happened to the paper maps that used to be in said glove box.
Hey so worried about this but not the funny hat give away?
That’s the way it must be a fine level of imbalance.
Obviously difficult to agree upon and almost impossible to time.
They’re rockin’ it.
I am a long time believer in if it is funny it is okay to go with it. If you think it’s funny and no one else does than take your lumps. I mean the guy didn’t have to rev the motor during the video thus making it funnier. Although I do think it would have been funnier if you assumed it was a real supercar but was not up to the level of the Murano Cross Cabriolet. Ever see that SNL skit where Patrick Swayze is a new male stripper going up against Chris Farley and when they both do their dance Swayze just wishes he could be as good as Farley?
I remember that skit and still find it bordering on unbelievable that his brother is the CEO of FMC.
Cousin. Close! The resemblance is uncanny.
Are you sure? I’ve read, I believe on this site, that they were brothers.
I’m totally fine to be wrong.
I think he’s doing a decent job, as is Mary Barra at GM.
I’m not driving anything either of their companies made. (2017 Honda Accord V6)
I feel like the caption was very dated, what even is a Fiero? Is it like a Fiesta? Is that some sort of slant against the Hispanic population?
(kidding I know what a Fiero is, but it only was made for 4 years over 35 years ago…)
I feel like How I Met Your Mother, which I realize is itself old now but hey it had huge viewership at the time and is much more recent, knows what a Fiero is.
Everyone else might think it’s a Wicked reference.
It’s unfortunate that you had to spend a half hour discussing that, but it had to be done. God forbid xpel (or cvk) took it the wrong way you’d have problems. You made the right decision. Keep dodging those internet outrage landmines. One time I spent 2 hours debating a comment I was gonna post to this site. Ended up not doing it. Better safe than sorry in a Twitter mob world
Test test, do I get the member tag?
Nope. Not yet. That’s alright
That’s easily fixed… Even I got one.
How did you fix it?
I didn’t do anything. (I swear it, your honor!) It just automagically showed up below my non-existent profile image.
The “easily fixed” part of the comment was “become a member, you cheap bastard” delivered in a stern Scottish accent. But I’m guessing you already are and there’s a flaw in the Matrix.
haha yeah we were talking with Matt about it the other day, apparently contributors don’t get the member badge, regardless of membership, but I do get the fancy (incredibly narrow and difficult to see) green border around my lack of picture.
Yeah. I thought I recognized you as a contributor, and as such, you deserve a nice, better, label. Maybe Matt, or Beau (I don’t think Jason gives a shit) are all about financial cash flow.
(And I will stick my usual comments ordering complaint here, much as Jatco XTronic CVT does, every time they get the chance.
And oh! Now that you mention it, I do see the faint green outline.
Anyway, I enjoy your contributions and wish you well.
Nah Matt had it figured out and spent too long on his day off trying to solve it, but then that broke other things so we told him not to worry about it, I really don’t mind.
Thanks for the kind words though!
On a side note, not sure what changed on this site but comments are all but unreadable now on my iPhone. Seems like they think they’re displaying on a much wider screen than I actually have. Anyone else seeing the same issue? I can’t even scroll sideways to read a full line of text.
I’m having the issue currently on my iPad
Same here but I swear they worked 2-3 hours ago. If relevant I use edge instead of safari.
Huh, seems to be fixed now.
No I am still experiencing it
I only read this site on a Windows laptop, using Edge. I’ve never even tried on my iPhone.
As a victim of Retreating Rabbit Syndrome, I approve your joke. When you’re dealing with a sponsor though, I understand being careful.
I know this website is already a master of this, but there is always the option of self-deprecating humor. It lets you make the joke but generally doesn’t have the same potentially negative impact on others because the only one being mocked is yourself, so sponsors shouldn’t get any blowback (aside from the association they paid for, and then that is on them if they didn’t know what they were signing up for given who runs this site). I get gleeful joy at the rampant use of self-deprecating humor around here, especially from Torch, so don’t be afraid to carry it over to the other social media sites.
This is a great example of what is usually hidden. The employees want to run with it and don’t want management to harsh their mellow but management has to worry about long term site profitability. I give caveats to the staff that they are all introspective enough to weigh all options and not just their own narrow viewpoints. I’ve worked for old companies that could not handle this situation this well.
Unfortunately, this is the world we now live in. Karens* everywhere, waiting to pounce with their phones and phony outrage, adding further proof that social media, for all of its ability to help you grow your brand, is still…(/Adrian Belew voice)…a dangerous place. It’s a bit sad that conversation even had to happen.
*no offense to Karens, obviously
The Karens who take offense will be undeterred by your asteriskial disclaimer.
Good, ’cause fuck ’em!
and not in the fun way!!
Huh?
While reading your comment I was expecting (really hoping actually) to have it end “(/Adrian Belew voice) a big electric cat”
I prefer lone rhinos.
I suppose you could have said “… to see these randos pull up in their kit cars…”.
That would have implied – in a slightly pejorative and/or dismissive manner – that CvK was some unknown doofus. It also makes the point without a reference to personal appearance, allowing you to dodge the alopecian minefield. 🙂
😮
Or bring the guy into it and do a fake Will Smith slap.
“You keep my car’s name out of your mouth!”
One of the most brilliant articles I’ve seen on the interwebs.
More than one hour for me.
