Look, I’m all for naming a car after a principal or founder of the company. They probably deserve the recognition, especially if it’s on a special car that’s sort of a magnum opus of the brand. However, things get tricky when you’re talking about first names; there are some that will work, and some that don’t.
Recently, the Car Moses reported that McLaren has filed for a trademark for “Bruce McLaren.” This could merely be an effort to protect intellectual property, but some other websites are excited about the prospect of a car named after the great Formula 1 driver and car constructor who founded Bruce McLaren Motor Racing in 1963. That’s fine, but do we really think that a car named “Bruce” makes sense?
I think this is tricky territory. “Edsel,” for example, seemed like a doomed name from the start, no matter the fact that he was Henry Ford’s only son and helmed the company from 1919 to 1943. “Bruce” is a good name, but as a model name, it’s out of place. There’s an argument being made that if a “Ferrari Enzo” can exist, then a “McLaren Bruce” can as well. I’d argue that logic doesn’t work. Say “Enzo” to anyone who doesn’t know the Argentine soccer star (I didn’t), and they will immediately think of the rather prickly founder of the company that makes cars with prancing horses on them, assuming they know cars. Or, they’ll just think it’s a cool, Italian-sounding something. Mention “Bruce,” however, and the typical person is likely to think of anyone but the founder of McLaren Motor Racing.

No, you’ll think of the guy who made the album The Return of Bruno, saved most of the crew at Nakatomi Plaza (RIP Mr. Takagi and Ellis), and then spared the entire planet from an asteroid:
Or maybe “Bruce” will evoke the legendary Hong Kong martial artist and movie star:

Don’t sleep on the Bruce who cared for the Earth’s remaining forests in space. And then his daughter barely made it out of Jurassic Park alive.

Don’t get started on music. First of all, it must be noted that the name “Bruce” is never uttered in the song by ELO that played in the roller rink when you were trying to chase the girl you had a crush on as a 12-year-old. Apparently, he’s saying “grooos,” which makes no sense at all.
There’s also The Boss, of course, but I don’t really care to hear some depressing track off of Nebraska since I’d rather use this as an excuse to bring up the Bruce Springsteen/Rick Springfield confusion so we can hear Jessie’s Girl for the 550th time, wouldn’t you?
[Ed note: the first Bruce I think of when I hear the name is Jaws’ infamous mechanical shark – Pete]
To be honest, I’ve never really been a fan of McLarens. They don’t look bad, but they’re too sterile and remind me of those brandless, we-didn’t-pay-for-rights-to-a-real-car generic exotics you might see in a video game or a kid’s toy that looks like everything and nothing at all. I’m told there are different models, but I can’t tell one from another. They certainly offer absurdly high performance that you can use about ten percent of on public streets; probably better than most Ferraris, but given the money, I’d take the Italian car all day long.

I’m also not sure why they decided to change the one thing that I did find distinctive about McLaren: the logo. I know the new one is supposed to be a heritage thing that goes back to Bruce’s original garage, but it looks like a financial institution. Old on top, new below:

Regardless, I have the utmost respect for the legacy that Bruce McLaren created in his short life, and I’m happy to see the brand flourishing today. I just hope they don’t try to honor him by naming the brand’s next uber-ride “Bruce.” Please, don’t bring me down; let the idea Die Hard.

First Bruce I think of is a friend’s old dog. He was a good dog.
Worse, they could have named it the ICFMSMP2 (I’m compensating for my small micro penis) Bruce is kind of sounding good now, right?
I think of the old 80s martial arts comedy “They Call me Bruce?” and its sequel “They Still Call Me Bruce?”
Now I want The Ting Tings to do a new version of That’s Not My Name.
If I got a Bruce McLaren, I would name it “Robert”.
My vote is for legendary frontman/vocalist, 747 pilot, and accomplished fencer Bruce Dickinson.
He’s an astonishingly good singer live. Late in the show, running from one side of the stage to the other, and note perfect. Amazing.
And he sure knew when more cowbell was needed. Ah, wrong one.
Well…when ya got a FEVER…the only prescription….
A little research shows in 50s Italia Enzo was as common a name as Bob in the US. In Italy people were named Enzo but it was also used as a nickname for Vincenzo, Lorenzo. So if you are okay with the Italian Bob you got to except Bruce
Do you really think Enzo or Ferrari were any more prevelent in people’s minds when he first started? Enzo for all I know might be Italian for Bruce. BTW I have a brother named Bruce. You don’t give a car an iconic name, you name a car and if it becomes iconic that name is iconic. Frankly the name BRUCE is more well known than Enzo which if I remember was the toy destroying robot in the Simpsons Christmas episode?
My neighbors Chihuahua is named Bruce…..
blinded by the light
revved up like a Bruce
another runner in the night
Considering Springsteen wrote that lyric, that kinda makes sense. But I think he was talking about a ’32 Ford Coupe (as in, the “little deuce coupe” the Beach Boys also sang about).
I thought it was roller dooching in the night
Should have gone “The Bruce” he may have been a kiwi but “the Bruce” sounds like some kind of Aussie bogan top fuel race car. Probably 8 of them out there racing.
I don’t ever remember there being confusion between Rick Springfield and Bruce Springsteen. However, there are a lot of people who think “On the Dark Side” by John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band from the “Eddie and the Cruisers” soundtrack and “One Headlight” by The Wallflowers fronted by Bob Dylan’s son Jakob are Bruce Springsteen songs.
LATE EDIT: Not sure how I never heard the Rick Springfield song “Bruce” – my knowledge of 80s music is pretty extensive.
I grew up in the eighties and Rick Springfield is the only name song I recognize in your post except Bob Dylan but you only used that to I’d his son who never heard of
The best tie-in I can think of between McLaren and music would be the late, great, Malcom McLaren (RIP).
Thundercougarfalconbird
Is there any indication it was originally going to be called “Michael” but the called it Bruce, just to keep it clear?
The first Bruce I think of is Robert the Bruce, King of Scots.
Enzo Ferrari did name a car after his son, Alfredo “Dino.”
Did you know the word for misheard lyrics is mondegreen?
I did not, it would make a great band name.
How about Bruce Wayne, the very first and only Bruce that came to my mind, and I don’t even care much for Batman.
Bruce Banner. Don’t make him angry.
[Rick Springfield voice]
I wish that I could DRESS A SQUIRREL!
I wish that I could DRESS A SQUIRREL!
Where can I find a SQUIRREL SIZED HAT?
(I always sing along with this version)
Also, maybe the Bob Semple Tank would have garnered more respect if it had been named Bruce instead.
This belongs on a playlist of misheard hits along with Eddie Money’s classic ode to breakfast for dinner “Bake Me Scones Tonight” and Asia’s passionate police corruption ballad “The Sweeter The Donut”.
Don’t forget, “There’s a bathroom on the right.”
I’m always hearing it as “I’m walking on sunshine, and it doesn’t feel good.”
‘Scuse me, while I kiss this guy . . .
I also always think of the shark from Jaws or my younger sister’s ex boyfriend who was a good guy who is sadly gone. Besides the original M6GT and the F1, which was really a Gordon Murray car, I have no interest in McLarens, either.
My wife’s maiden name is McLaren, so you could say I have an interest in at least one.

The first Bruce I think of is the great white shark from Finding Nemo. “Ello… Name’s Bruce”. It also helps that my 5 year old has a stuffed shark he named Bruce because of that scene…
And that joke came from “Jaws” because Spielberg named the mechanical shark Bruce after his lawyer. Pixar was always the greatest at inside jokes.
It’s all right, I understand. Why trust a shark, right?

I mean Bruce is better than Geoff
https://youtu.be/bTQEVFH8V_w?t=94 – Obligatory my name is Jeff
Almost as good of a name as Hammerhead Eage i-Thrust
Will it be AWD? Cause otherwise it could end up stuck in the mud somewhere in the swamps of Jersey. Especially if its tires are slashed and it almost crashes.
NGL, I love it. But in reality, I am just going to name my next jalopy “bruce”
First Bruce that comes to mind is Royal Oak native Bruce Campbell. Car needs the license plate BOOMSTK
Groovy!
First Bruce that comes to my mind is Bruce Wayne.
