Nissan’s Version Of The EV Renault Twingo Will Be Styled Like The Famous Pike Cars: Designer

First of all, I’d like to gloat a bit, because this is a bit of news I predicted back in 2022. Over at The Old Site, when there was some early speculation about Nissan launching a small electric city car, I suggested – no, demanded – that this new small EV take its design inspiration from Nissan’s famous Pike Factory “boutique cars” of the late ’80s and early ’90s. Now, it seems like Nissan is doing just that, at least according to what Nissan Europe’s Head of Design, Giovanny Arroba, told Autocar. This is, of course, very good news.

Back when I wrote my article suggesting Nissan use their Pike cars – which, if you’re unfamiliar, were low-volume dramatically retro-styled cars based on the Nissan Micra – as the stylistic basis for their new EV city car, I thought that the new Renault 5 EV might be the basis for these new cars. Now, it appears Renault’s equally retro-styled Twingo EV will form the basis of this new EV city car, which Nissan will call the Wave.

Vidframe Min Bottom

The question now is just how this new Wave will incorporate the styling and inspiration of the Pike cars, as Arroba stated, which could be tricky because, of course, there’s not just one Pike car. There were four, the Be-1, Pao, Figaro, and S-Cargo:

While these all share some common traits – they’re cute, plucky, sort of modern-yet-retro, friendly, and so on – they all have quite different sorts of looks and character. Going clockwise from upper left, we have the Be-1, which took inspiration from other industrial design objects like teapots and cameras; the Pao, which had a sort of adventurer/safari/cute-rugged vibe; the Figaro, with its elegant roadster looks, in colors named for the four seasons; and finally the S-Cargo, a fun delivery vehicle with a name and look based on a silly pun for garlicky French snails.

So, what form will this Pike-inspiration take? A direct homage to one of the cars, or bits of all of them, or just a more general Pike-like playful approach to the design? Then there’s the car that’s forming the basis for the Wave, the Twingo, which already has buckets of character and charm of its own:

Twingo Leak Topshot

…this design is clearly based on the original Twingo, and I think Renault’s designers did a fantastic job updating that car’s iconic look:

Twingo 001

Assuming – I think safely – that Nissan won’t have infinite money to throw at this, it’s likely the changes to the Twingo would need to be limited to the body parts that are actually easier to change, not the parts that form the major unibody or even some of the bigger stampings like the doors. If I had to speculate, which I do, I’d guess Nissan’s designers will have the front and rear bumper skins, lighting elements, hood, wheels, mirrors, and maybe the ability to add-on some detail to the doors.

Twingoev Couldchange

I suppose door skins could change, but based on how lazy Nissan was with their re-skin of the Mitsubishi Outlander into the new Rogue PHEV, I’m going to err on the side of less instead of more. So, let’s say this is what Nissan has to work with. So what could they do to make a Pike-ified wave?

Let’s sketch some ideas. By hand, I mean, because even if it’ll be all slick, I don’t want to use any AI. Quick and dirty, human-style.

First off, I just have to get this one out of my system as a happy Pao owner. Here’s a fairly direct Pao-style Nissan Wave:

Pao Style Wave

Our own feverish designer the Bishop suggested the fake hinges – I was thinking maybe they could be indicator repeaters–and the black stripe on the back window suggesting the flip-open windows of the OG Pao. This is, of course, pretty unlikely that they’d do something so specific to the Pao, so I tried playing with a more general playful sort of Pike-inspired idea, though to be honest the overall shape of the Twingo sort of limits things to the Be-1 or Pao, but still, worth a try:

Wave Pikey Colani

Hm, that turned out a little more like a strange Colani sort of design than I intended; I think all those circles are a bit much. But still, you get the general idea. I think there’s a lot that Nissan could do on the Twingo platform to make something with that Pike-like sensibility, that sort of appealing whimsical quality, and I really hope Nissan means what they say here, because a new Pike-like city car would be fantastic.

Do it, Nissan!

I’d love to see that! The new Twingo already looks very Japanese with it’s happy eyes.

Owned a classic Twingo along with my Figaro a few years ago: Happy times 🙂

It’s not like other pike cars had thrilling drivetrains.

Exactly, the Pike cars are just begging for electric conversions nowadays, their drivetrains are *yawn*

That S-Cargo has headlights only Jar-Jar Binks could find attractive.

Oh, you thought like the Pike cars?

No, no, we meant like Pike Peak, see how we mashed a Twingo and a wide body GT-R into this design beauty…

I once drive a Nissan Micra that Nissan had made mid-engined with a 350Z V6.

It was utterly terrifying, but at least they tried.

The Renault Twingo becomes the Nissan Wave, and the Renault 5 becomes the Nissan Micra IIRC. I wish that Nissan would bring either or both of these small EVs to the US market, at prices below their own third-gen Leaf EV (is this the last gen of the Leaf, or did I mishear that info somewhere?).

I would be all for a 5/Micra, although hearing this about the Pike design for the Wave, I’d be tempted to go for that instead.

I’ll be VERY surprised if either of them come to America. But maybe you live someplace where they will be offered?

Such a strong and simple move for Nissan.

I can’t wait to see how they manage to step on their own genitals.

Based on how the Renault 5 was rebadged into the new Micra, they modified the fenders and the exterior door cards, too

I just heard some guys saying all the trade prices are going up because they can’t get cheap vans anymore and have to pass that cost on. They want $20k vans back they had a few years ago. Now they are paying $50k. A cheap little little van could do extremely well right now. I guess that’s part of the idea of building kei vans and trucks in the us but why not a modern s-cargo.

When was the last time there was a $20,000 van? You have to go back over a decade for the last time a Transit Connect was under $25k (2015), even further back for low 20s, and have to go back a couple of decades to reach when full size vans stickered for $20k. Not saying the automakers aren’t treating tradesmen like bottomless ATMs right now with $50,000 work vans, because they are, but it isn’t a totally new phenomenon, they’ve been charging too much for vans for a long time and discontinuing anything smaller than full-size has just made it worse

I’m assuming it’s sticker vs fleet / real world price. They were talking about what they actually paid and it may have been more to low to mid 20s at that. Now it’s doubled if not more. They were saying 2023 I would believe more to 2020. But I guess it’s possible they are still paying regular prices as the general public wasn’t really interested in them. The little pro master and nv200 / chevy version would be deeply discounted most of the time too. I can remember around 2010ish the TCs were stickered about $22k and they would sell for $14k.

Renault 5 was recently reborn as a Micra: new lights and some plastic bits changed, almost identical interior. It works, at least in pictures. But haven’t seen it IRL yet. Something similar can be expected from the Twingo redesign – you can recognize the original design, but still somewhat different. Current Mitsu Colt and Grandis are really cynical badge engineering in comparison to the R5/Micra.

I would love to see this as an S-Cargo. Would be great for small business deliveries, Restaurants, Flowers, Car Part etc.

As much as I love the Pao drawing, being an EV I think the Be-1 makes the most sense stylistically, as the lack of grill would be easy to pull off. Doesn’t really matter which car they go off, the fact that this is happening in any capacity is a win for the car world.

Pao-Style gives me some Suzuki SX4 vibes, something I would buy again in a heartbeat if it were to become available again (granted the Twingo is quite a bit smaller than the SX4).

This is a fantastic idea, hell, I’d have a Pao right now, if I didn’t live in a no-fun state that gets all weird about imported cars (got ahead of myself once and ate a deposit on one after getting feedback from a DMV administrator)
