Way back in the mid-’90s when my parents decided it would be a good idea to connect to the internet, the family email address was [lastname]@[isp].net. Our last name was similar enough to a drink that we quickly found ourselves receiving inquiries from overseas (mostly from Middle Eastern countries for some reason) regarding quotes for exporting various Coca-Cola products. Rather than being targeted at a single address as spam/scam messages are now, these emails were sent to a list, so we were free to communicate with other recipients. Since most of these people shared our last name, we ended up ‘meeting’ some very distant relatives this way.
