Let’s say that hypothetically, you won the Powerball. If you’re like me, a well-meaning dirtbag with a penchant for performance machinery, you’ll probably still be on Facebook Marketplace looking at Porsches. However, lottery money means you’re probably looking at something faster than a Boxster. A 911? Great choice, but what about a bigger number? One bigger than 924, 928, 930, or 944. If you hit 968, go back. I’m talking about the Porsche 962, an enormously successful Group C and IMSA GTP race car that’ll bring your Le Mans fantasies to life.
As it turns out, because Facebook Marketplace is the default place to list everything from 17 DVD copies of “Click” to a Subaru Tribeca stretch limousine, there’s at least one Porsche 962 up for sale on there. Unsurprisingly, it’s a good one. The Jägermeister-liveried example we’re looking at here started life with a Chapman monocoque but a racing incident later in life required a rebuild using the same sort of strengthened Thompson monocoque legendary racing outfit Kremer used in its later 962s.

As for what’s under the clamshell, this particular 962 is powered by a three-liter air-cooled flat-six sporting Kühnle, Kopp und Kausch forced induction and a massive air-to-air intercooler. As Rolls-Royce used to say, power is sufficient, especially with a curb weight of around 2,000 pounds. Instead of zero-to-60 mph numbers that don’t hold much relevance on a road course, just watch this onboard footage of five-time Le Mans-winner Derek Bell giving it a belting around Lime Rock.
Yep, I’d call that rapid. Wrestling a historic top-class endurance racer around a little track like Lime Rock seems like a serious workout, but come on, isn’t it so much cooler than doing the normal new-rich person thing and flexing an Equinox membership?

You’re probably wondering about mechanical condition, and the listing states that it’s ready to go, with one event on a freshly-built engine and gearbox meaning it’s already been shaken down. Apparently it also comes with a ton of spares, which is important because one can only imagine that 962 parts aren’t exactly sitting on the shelf at Autozone.

Beyond that, would you just look at this thing? It’s provocative, one of the coolest ways any human can possibly reach 200 mph. What’s more, you can actually still race it like previous owners have, as many historic racing events hold space for Group C cars, so you can live out your Le Mans fantasies without having a surname like Andretti, Stuck, or Ferté.

What about the price tag? Well, if you brush aside the fact that you probably shouldn’t drive this thing on the street, it’s actually surprisingly affordable compared to a Carrera GT. This Porsche 962 carries an asking price of $650,000, which seems exceptionally reasonable for what you’re getting. Sure, it’s unusual to see a car of this caliber on Marketplace, but I’d like to think that someone in tech or finance or neoptism is only about two lunch beers from making an impulse buy. Fit that description, have some track experience, and don’t want to be punted into the stratosphere by a dentist in a Ferrari 296 Challenge car? You know where to find this racing Porsche for connoisseurs.

“Kühnle, Kopp und Kausch forced induction”
TIL that’s what a KKK turbo means.
I saw Hans Stuck talking/driving a 962 on TV and the cars came standard with turn signals, so road legal in some countries. I assume the ride height is adjustable, so nearly there.
Also the Porsche’s were quiet on the track compared to NA engined racers. I attended many IMSA races back in the day and owned a 911 then.
In case you were curious like me about the highly specific Tribeca stretch limo, it does exist.

This thing is in Hollis NH only about 30 miles south of my home. I wonder if he would let me take it for a test drive.
And let me guess, the A/C just needs a recharge.
The 962 fleet is remarkably diverse, There are several race cars convertered to road cars and many built as road cars. Then when the 962 was homologated as a road car several road cars were converted to race cars, including some that were race cars originally. The 1989 Le Mans was won by a “road” 962.
And over on my local Craigslist there is a “BANKRUPTCY NO PROBLEM” place selling a Wrangler 392 for $115k. Wonder which listing is reaching for a more elusive customer. The well heeled car racing enthusiast on Facebook, or the person willing to spend $115k at a dealer like that….regardless of their credit.
Not to mention that MSRP for a 392 is more like $105K.
I have seen a few 918s for sale- oddly all seem to have 4 cylinder VW motors. I’m sure they are real
I wonder if Jochen Dauer (or any of the others) still do conversions?

I LOVE the 962. I would never want to drive one as a street car. That is a punishing cockpit, and this machine only makes sense at race speeds where you don’t have a chance to consider how uncomfortable you are.
Kühnle, Kopp und Kausch
That’s unfortunate. You wouldn’t expect the Germans to have a blind spot for this sort of thing.
I think I saw this exact car at the first Rennsport Reunion at Lime Rock. I remember someone stuffed a red 956 there and the owner laughed it off with the attitude of, it’s a race car, it happens, which I thought was really cool. Driver was fine, of course.
All the club racers at Limerock have a great attitude.
Most of them have the attitude because $1million for a weekend of fun isn’t a huge problem. Others roll the Neon they’ve been working on for six months and it’s the same attitude.
If you can’t afford to leave it at the track, don’t bring it to the track.
This was a big event with the factory flying over some of their museum cars, but there were definitely no poor people involved and the attitude of everyone was great. I think the 956 was from Brumos Racing, but my memory sucks, so maybe not.
Ahhh, winner of the elusive FBMP2 class!
Someone is clearly doing this to be silly, because why pay ridiculous auction fees to sell it to your target audience when you can make a couple dozen local news broadcasts featuring Kent Brockman?
Wait, I could have a Fiero AND a 962 and still pocket like.. 4.2mill according to today’s Sh*tbox Showdown rules?

Is this the first time saying “I know what I’ve got” is actually not wrong in thinking that it is, indeed, rare?
Why not? It has headlights and tail lights.
So here in AZ it’s “OBD2 inspection”, and gas cap leak test. On a vehicle like this that presumably doesn’t have OBD2, it would go under a sniffer, and a gas cap test. I’m betting this would pass. They have never checked headlights taillights or signals..
Looking forward to seeing it in tomorrows Shitbox Showdown.
Will he trade for a boat and a shotgun? Quality boat stuff.
I ended up with a ’79 Mercedes 300TD off of Ebay because of this exact scenario. It was only $1600 though. Ended up as our family car for about a year before selling it for $2700 after buffing the paint out and addressing a few minor mechanical things, so it worked out pretty well.
That’s pretty friggin’ cool, actually.
In 1999, I did the same thing one Saturday afternoon when my Dad said to me “You want to go down to the auto auction for the hell of it?” A couple of beers later I had buzz-purchased a ’79 Mercedes 300SD for $1,500. It turned out it was a one owner car and it was onlu approaching 70,000 miles. I drove it for 3 years and had one window regulator and a fuel pump go out on it in that time. Built like a tank and had the solid Tuetonic ‘thunk’ when one closed the doors. A properly built Benz. I traded it for an ’86 Mustang Convertible that my sister had, and In hindsight, I definitely got the bad end of the trade…
Someone listed a non-numbers matching ’56 Speedster for $237.5k on Denver craigslist. I haven’t done the research to see what is a normal value for one, if such a thing exists.

Is this still available?
and does the ac blow cold?
I need some market research data on the crossover of people shopping on FB marketplace and people buying $650k cars.
It’s where old, out of touch people go to become nazis.
I guess they could also do some shopping with their home equity.
So where are the young people going to become socially concious nazis?
Dunno. I’m old. It’s probably instaTok or something.
Right??? Who knows and it will be something new next week!
962… or 906 Carrera 6? Decisions, decisions…
