You know what’s a cool car? The Jensen Interceptor. A British GT fastback with a big American V8 and gobs of presence. These were fantastic, athletic-looking cars, bold and handsome and fast. There were even versions of the car, the Jensen FF (for Ferguson Formula), that were AWD road cars, over a dozen years before the Audi Quattro hit the scene. If you and three friends wanted to go somewhere fast and in some genuinely head-turning style, it was hard to beat an Interceptor.
It seems that I’m not the only person who thinks this, because Jensen International Automotive (JIA), which currently builds resto-modded original interceptors, is teasing an all-new Interceptor. And, unlike so many re-imagined motoring icons that threaten to come back in modern form, this one isn’t an EV. It’s the opposite: a VE, as in Vee-Eight.
Here’s what the press release from JIA has to say about it:
“Inspired by the iconic 1960s Jensen Interceptor, JIA’s first-ever clean-sheet-designed product will be completely new from the ground up. The car will blend an elegant yet striking contemporary body design with an aluminium chassis and a bespoke V8 engine to ensure a fully analogue driving experience, delivering a thoroughly modern take on a luxury British GT.”
Interesting, right? Here’s the teaser image they provided:

That’s not a whole lot to go on, except I suppose it still has the general fastback shape of an original Interceptor. The proportions are much lower and in line with modern cars, which is a bit of a shame, I think, as one of the things I always liked about the original interceptor is its tall greenhouse:

That illustration, by the way, is from a Chrysler Brochure where an Interceptor was just snuck in, because that’s how cool they are. But back to this new Interceptor; let’s see if we can see anything else in that teaser image. Computer! ENHANCE!

Mmmm, there’s not much more there. I hope there will be something similar to the Interceptor’s bubble rear window and that shark fin-like C-pillar, but I can’t tell. There does seem to be some kind of reverse-rake detailing at the rear quarter?
The car is said to have an aluminum chassis and a “bespoke V8,” which means, I suppose, that they’re developing their own engine? Even the original Interceptor didn’t do that, as it used Chrysler V8s. Is what JIA is developing really going to be better than, say, a crate LS motor or something like that? I guess we’ll see.
I’d also like to note that this press release and photo were sent out under embargo, which I forgot about, so this is a bit later than you may have seen on other outlets, but why exactly was this embargoed? Is this really timely news you need at a specific time?
Oh well. I’m just excited to see how this turns out; the Interceptor is, in my opinion, a truly iconic car, and seeing a modern take on this car seems exciting to me, even though they’re going to build these in very low quantities and the chances of encountering one will be, let’s be honest, pretty low.
But still! A new Interceptor!

They should lean into the Chrysler V8 heritage and put a Hellcat under the bonnet.
The original looks like the offspring of an AMC Pacer and a Gen 1 Mercury Capri, but I’d be interested to see a modern reboot. At least it would be something different.
Bespoke V8 could also just mean someone else’s V8 with some sort of special tune and the Jensen logo on the plastic engine cover

These guys build gorgeous cars. They fixed the number one issue original Interceptors have visually, which is a deep underbite on the front end. I’ve been hoping I could find an interceptor in my price range for years, but without having to cross the US to do it. so far, I have not found the right one. these guys find success with this new model, its likely to drive interceptors up in price making me finding one even less likely.

A cool idea by I assume this will be well into the six figure range and have the sort of reliability we’ve come to expect from boutique British cars
I have no idea what I’m talking about, but that’s what the internet is for. The proportions are wonk-a-rama. The hood is too short for the length of the cabin. The cabin needs to be pushed back and if that means a more upright windshield that wraps around the side a bit along with a taller greenhouse, good because that’s what they should be going for. Also what’s going on with what we can see of the front? Did they graft a sixth gen Camaro front clip onto it? The rear appears to be from a ’24 Toyota Venza or a recent Aston Martin, neither of which looks like a Jensen. Hmmph.
I thought they were ugly, with the giant humpback fishbowl rear window that didn’t really seem to fit the design well, they were heavy, they plowed like a tractor because of the lump of a big Chrysler V-8 in front, rusted like they wanted to become one with the earth again as fast as they could out of shame…..all in all a poor effort IMHO.
I thought that window was groundbreaking cool.
So did Robert Opron who designet quite a few cars with it: The SM, the Fuego, the Reanult 11 and 25.
And porsche also thought so and used it on the 924-944-968 range.
It would be quite fitting to use the baddest of the bad Chrysler motor now. a Crate Hellephant 6.2 would be quite epic actually.
Hell, a regular 6.4 would probably suffice, and befit the heritage just fine (where the original didn’t use the baddest of the bad 426, but just a sturdy big 440).
Always wanted an Interceptor. Of all the many many problems you could have with an English hand-built car at least the Chrysler powertrain was unlikely to be one of them.
Time to make an intro sequence for a rebooted action television series from the ’70s. That never actually existed.

The interceptor stars in the new British TV detective show Lynley (available in the US on BritBox I think). I was surprised at how small it looks in modern traffic. I also love the funky headrests. Are there bars that headrest aficionados go to to when their saner friends head off to hang out with Jason at the tail light bars?

the Restomod versions which are fitted with LS3 GM motors and more modern interior bits use old Jensen’s to start with though. This is supposed to be an all new body and chassis it seems.

Yup, full time 4×4. Also the first production car with anti-lock brakes I believe.
Also, the 1938 GAZ-61 was technically a 4WD production car, only 238 were made, but that wasn’t completely terrible for a fairly expensive Soviet car at the time. The Jensen FF only outsold it by about 100 cars anyway, so they were both in the low three figures for production.
Had a body shell and chassis derived from the Ford Model B, and somehow used a licensed copy of the Model A 3-speed transmission, made to work with the proprietary 4X4 system. Early examples also had Model A engines, before switching to a licensed Chrysler flat head 6 for the final year or so of production.

Ok, lets be more productive: Could you superimpose(?) the original on top of the the new one? Assuming the new one has 22” wheels or something, if there are no numbers to work with. Could be interesting.
