Happy Friday! We’re at the end of a short week, so I thought we’d take our three winners and pit them against each other in a game of Track, Daily, Burn. The rules should be self-explanatory; it’s just like that other party game, only with cars. One becomes your new weekend toy, another your new daily driver, and the third must be torched for the insurance money.
Our third winner for the week was, if I may say so, a very deserving one: the red Audi Quattro absolutely creamed that cosplaying cop car. Don’t get me wrong; Studebaker Larks are very cool old cars, but I highly doubt any were ever actually cop cars – though there was a special long-wheelbase taxi version, so I guess anything is possible. At any rate, this one was turned into a cop car by someone with a vinyl cutter and no spell-checker. “Heros,” honestly. Come on.

The early Audi Quattros, with their lockable diffs and mandatory five-speed manuals, were way cool cars, and much simpler machines than you think. They’re just a little weird, so you have to approach them on their own terms, kind of like Saabs. Get a good repair manual (Bentley, none of that Chilton or Haynes nonsense) and some decent tools, and dive in. The drive is worth the maintenance learning curve.
All right; we all know the game, so let’s recap the contestants:
2011 Mazda Mazda2

This little green Mazda was Tuesday’s winner by default, after a bunch of you pointed out that its Camaro competitor was a bait-and-switch deal. They say cheaters never prosper, which sadly isn’t necessarily true, but not on my watch, they don’t, bucko. This Mazda2 is beat-up – and worse, automatic – but it’s honest.

Obviously, this would make a good daily driver, especially in the city, with its compact size and good fuel economy. But small front-wheel-drive economy cars like this make pretty good amateur rallycross cars too, and the automatic doesn’t matter so much there. Or, I guess, if you really can’t find anything redeeming about it, it’s probably pretty flammable.
2017 Ford Transit Connect

When you’re waiting on delivery of something cool – a vintage Genesis concert T-shirt, maybe, or a Funko Pop figurine of Bill Nye The Science Guy – what vehicle delivers it is the last thing on your mind. But a lot of those delivery vehicles end up on the used car market like anything else, and you can buy one. This Ford van has delivered all sorts of cool stuff, and probably a lot of lame boring stuff as well, all over the upper Midwest, and on Wednesday, it delivered a narrow victory over a pale yellow VW Beetle.

You might think the idea of putting a big, boxy vehicle onto a race track is silly, but there is plenty of precedent, including from Ford itself. Since this is based on the same platform as a Focus, technically you could shoehorn the drivetrain from a wrecked Focus ST or RS into this, and create a little mini-Supervan of your own. When it absolutely, positively has to be there right now… oh wait, that was FedEx, not DHL.
1985 Audi 4000S Quattro

I admit it; I was really hoping this Audi would win yesterday. I grew up with VWs and Audis of this era, and I’ve always liked them. Several years ago, I was actually on the hunt for a 4000 Quattro, and had this one been around then, I might have jumped on it. It’s closer to stock than most inexpensive Quattros you see, and despite some rust, it’s actually in pretty good shape.

Obviously, with its racing pedigree, this car would be a natural for autocross or rallycross, or even track use if you really wanted to. But personally, I think it would be a tragedy to pull out that nice interior to make this a race car. Lots of folks are afraid of German cars this age, but not me; I’d daily this thing.
So there they are, and you know the game: choose one as a daily driver, one as a track toy (keeping in mind that “track” can mean any motorsports activity), and one to set ablaze. I’m not doing a poll, because it would have nine entries and be really confusing. So you’ll have to just put your choices in the comments. You’ve got all weekend to debate, discuss, and decide. See you back here on Monday!
Daily: Mazda2
Track: Audi
Burn: Transit
Daily: Mazda2
Track: Audi
Burn: Transit
DD Mazda
Track TC
Burn Audi
Track Mazda
Daily Audi
Burn Ford
Pretty straightforward for me
Track: Audi
Daily: Transit Connect
Burn: Mazda
Track: Quattro! (Easy/natural choice)
Daily: Mazda
Burn: Fix Or Repair Daily/Found On
Road Dead van (DOWN BY
THE RIVER!)
Same votes. The Ford is beat, so let it go. The Mazda is economical enough for a daily, and the Audi is the best bet for some fun on the track.
Track: Audi (rallycross, mostly)
Daily: Mazda2
Burn: Transit Connect
Track: Audi
Daily: TC
Burn: Mazda2 with its 4 spd and salvage title
This is easy for me! I don’t need to drive to work (thanks public transit!), but if I do it is an easy seven miles and I can park in a covered garage.
Daily: Audi! Audi! Audi! A fun daily in a real color that can pop over to the local European car show during the Summer AND I can throw my kid’s car seat in the back.
Track: Transit. Obviously. Get you a track car that can pick up it’s own parts with ease.
Burn: Mazda. I’m sorry, but it ain’t easy being (mostly) green. Or automatic and slow with too few doors, a salvage title, and extensive body damage.
Daily – Mazda (it’s unusual and practical)
Track – Audi (though I’d have to find a period-correct co-driver with a Curta calculator)
Burn – Transit (I like those but after a trip to the moon over 7 MSP winters that one is begging for sweet release)
Incidentally, there’s only 6 permutations of D/T/B here, which seems poll-able.
I nearly bought a 4000S Quattro but ended up with a 740 Turbo when they were only 15 years old with +/-100k miles and while I loved the Volvo I have always sort of regretted not picking the Audi so my picks are:
Daily – Audi
Track – Ford because of rules but really also Audi
Burn – Mazda
Track the Mazda, daily the van and burn the quatro
Track: Supervan!!! Just need to decide if I’m going with an Ecoboost 4 from a modern Mustang or and old push-rod 302 with a 348 stroker crank for the mid-engine conversion.
Daily: Audi. I’m with you on this one Mark. As DCI Hunt would say, “Fire up the Quattro!”
Burn: The Deuce. It won by default so it gets burned by default.
I would track the Audi, daily the Transit Connect (after an engine swap), and torch the cute little green thing. Haha
Track: Mazda 2 (B-Spec anyone?)
Daily: Audi
Burn: Ford
Track the Transit
Daily the Quattro
Burn, with no pleasure and much remorse, the Mazda2
This is the way. Actually, I’d tell everyone that I burned the Mazda2 but secretly would have just hidden it somewhere safe.
Track: Mazda – light, cheap, not too much power cause I’m ham fisted. Rallyx! Maybe autox, kind of a bummer about the auto, but would sure let you focus on carrying speed.
Daily: Audi – obviously. Current daily is a mid aughts A8. I’m not scared.
Burn: Ford – I’m a van guy, but this one seems all but used up. Also, it’s the odd vehicle out for track or daily use. Plus it’s the biggest so it’ll make the biggest fire!
Very easy,
Track, Transit Connect, They will never see you coming, ha ha
Daily, Fiesta, excuse me I mean M2
Burn, Burn, Burn the Audi, I don’t need that nightmare.
Despite coming from the same factory in Mexico, the Fiesta and Mazda 2 vary a lot in important details which prevent little parts swaps, however if you take bigger bites stuff bolts up. For example the engines are different, the suspension is different the main mounting point are the same. Common Fiesta aftermarket suspension packages will fit.
This opens the possibility of the Mazda 2 ST if the parts bite is big enough. (-;
no, the Mazda 2 was never produced in the same factory as the Fiesta. This Mazda has a J-vin while the next gen that was sold as a Scion and Yaris has a 3-vin but was built on a Mazda factory alongside the 3.
My apologies I must have fallen victim to a myth.
There definitely can be suspension swaps on some Mazda 2.
track: Audi
Daily: Audi
Burn: none (gun to my head the mazda with its slushbox)
Daily: Audi. Easiest pick of the three.
Track: I have been back and forth about a half-dozen times on this … the Transit Connect’s Focus bones mean it’s on the way to being a solid autocross weapon, but the Mazda is already pre-wrinkled … h*ck, I keep thinking about the Transit in “Cruising Wagon” livery and smiling. So we’ll track the Ford.
Burn: Sorry, Mazda. Nothing personal.
Daily: Audi
Track: Mazda 2 (swap it with another powertrain, like maybe a Mazda 3 powertrain with a stick, if it would fit? Idk, I just don’t wanna daily anything besides the Audi)
Burn: The Camaro stealership.
Track the van!!
Daily the Mazda.
Burn… No, I would never. Give the Audi reassuring pats to the hood.
…and burn the dealership that has the Camaro.
Daily: Mazda
Track: Audi
Burn: Ford
Burn the Audi. The wallet will thank you.
Track the Mazda 2. Cheap and easy.
Daily the Transit Connect. Handy, high mileage, but parts bin parts.
Track: Audi, especially if we’re talking a rally
Daily: Ford, need something to tow the Audi and hold all my tools and spares
Burn: Mazda, but reluctantly.
