How Are You Spending $3,500? Dodge D100 vs Jaguar XJ12 vs Volvo 850 vs Omni GLH

This week’s theme has been simplicity itself: all the cars have been the same price. And as it turns out, they all are said to run and drive well, so you can just go get any one of them and head for home, no trailer needed. But which one out of this motley assortment of vehicles is the best way to spend three and a half grand?

Yesterday wasn’t even a contest; almost nobody wanted that Hummer H3. I expected it to pull a few more votes, considering its competition was a Chrysler compact, but apparently the Hummer’s uncertain condition and lousy presentation didn’t do it any favors, giving Carroll Shelby’s red-headed stepchild an easy win.

You all know without asking which one is my choice. I actually quite like the L-bodies in general, and if you’re going to get one, this is the one to get. Sure, it’s a little rusty, and it’s nobody’s idea of stylish, but when is a little car with too much power for its own good not fun?

So … we have our four finalists for the week. I’m not going to give you any silly scenarios or anything; this will just be a simple vote for your favorite. Let’s do a quick recap.

1976 Dodge D100 Adventurer

This old Dodge truck is nowhere near original; someone pointed out in the comments that it has Chevy fenders on the bed in place of the original Dodge ones, and now that I look at photos of what it’s supposed to look like, it’s obvious. But not many people are going to know that, outside of a classic Mopar show; they’ll just see a cool ’70s stepside truck. And replacing bits of a car with bits you like better from other cars is a time-honored hot rodding tradition anyway.

Speaking of replacing bits: some of you mentioned a desire to replace this truck’s 318 V8 with a later 5.9-liter Magnum V8 with fuel injection. That would certainly wake it up, and if you installed a newer overdrive automatic to go with it, you’d probably save some fuel as well. That’s the beauty of a non-original vehicle like this; the purists are already gonna hate it, so you might as well do what you want to it.

1985 Jaguar XJ12

I just want to go on record as repeating my opinion that this is a Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad idea. It’s right up there with following a stranger into an alleyway in Tijuana, or greenlighting Cop Rock. It is guaranteed to end in tears. I mean, a gray-market example of an incredibly complicated Jaguar from just after the British Leyland debacle, for sale at a dealership that obviously knows nothing about it? What could possibly not go wrong?

I mean, fortune favors the bold, and all that, but look at this engine bay. It looks like Medusa got assimilated by the Borg. Sure, it runs now, but that’s how they get you. But if you are brave enough to tackle it, don’t you dare swap in a Chevy V8. The V12 is the only unique thing about this car. If you want a V8-swapped Jag, look for a more common XJ6, or one that has already been swapped. They’re not hard to find.

1996 Volvo 850 Wagon

00x0x 7k45jrcqdq2 0ci0t2 1200x900

Volvo wagons have got to be the unlikeliest enthusiast’s cars of all time. They’re not sporting, they’re not fast (well, the turbocharged ones kinda are), and they’re styled like a mini-mart. And yet, we all go through a phase where we want one. I have a few theories as to why, but basically it boils down to a lack of bullshit. The other cars we lust after are silly, cantankerous, blindingly expensive, or all three, and here we have a car that just does what you want it to do, and despite its appearance, manages to not be boring while doing it.

This one is equipped how you’d want it, with a non-turbocharged engine and a manual transmission, for maximum enjoyment with minimum fuss. It has a shit-ton of miles on it, but it looks like it has been well cared for, and just needs a new steward to keep maintaining it in the same manner.

1985 Dodge Omni GLH

00v0v Kg4liud3nre 0ci0t2 1200x900
Image: Craigslist seller

When I visited the Shelby Heritage Center in Las Vegas a few years ago, there was not a single Dodge Shelby car on display, and only a small wall display talking about them. I think that’s a shame, and not just because I’m a Mopar fan. Sure, the Cobra, GT40, and Shelby Mustangs are cool, and they’re an important part of the story, but they come from an era when horsepower was easy and guilt-free; going faster was simply a matter of throwing displacement at the problem. The turbocharged Dodges came from a far less innocent era, and had to work harder to go fast. Giving them lip-service is an oversight, in my opinion.

Besides, like it or not, the Omni GLH embodies the hot rod ethos: stick the big engine in the small car, and go have fun. And doing it to a front-wheel-drive economy car, when your competitors are still hawking rear-drive V8 pony cars, is badass. Somehow, I like this scruffy GLH better than I would a pristine example. The rust is disappointing, but as long as it isn’t structural, it doesn’t matter that much.

$3,500 isn’t a whole lot for any car these days, let alone something fun and interesting. But I think any of these qualify. There’s a little something for everyone here, I think. So which one is the one for you?

Omni is Never the Answer, unless the question is “which car should go to the crusher.”

Volvo, 100%.

1st: The truck. Anything that runs with a bed is probably worth 4k. I could use it for trips to the hardware store and the dump for five years and probably sell it for what I paid. That it looks interesting is a bonus.

2nd: The Omni is just too much of a crap can, if an interesting, surprisingly fast one. Would be fun to flog and confuse people with how fast that old kcar can go. 20 year old me would buy it and probably put it in an ditch within a month.

3rd: The Volvo would be the easy choice if I needed a daily and had a $3500 budget, but I have a daily driver and despite being a manual wagon, it’s pretty boring. Also one of my least favorite Volvo designs.

4th.: The Jag. I don’t have the time, patience or love for old Jags to deal with 45 year old British wiring and v12. Better to go to someone who prefers tinkering to driving (perfectly valid perspective).

I’ll take the truck. I could build a pretty cool hotrod with this for not much money.

I haven’t owned a Volvo. Or even driven one. But I had a SAAB 9000 Turbo and loved it. So, the 850 it is. Swedish precision and all that. I have neighbors that had a beautiful V70R that I might have bought if they had let me know they were trading it in on a Lexus crossover. Maybe better that I didn’t. It and they were from Nebraska, so who knows how much salt had been allowed to attack the undercarriage.

An Omni with a suddenly uncooperating stick nearly stranded me in 1981, but I managed to limp back to HQ across town in 2nd gear. So, it’s disqualified.

The other two? No freaking way. Just a couple of hard nopes.

Gotta be one of the Dodges here. The Jag is terrifying and the Volvo isn’t a turbo. . .

Who would have thought an Omni would be the best of show anywhere in 2025?

I vote Omni, Dodge, Volvo, pass, Jag.

The Volvo looks good but for the money to me the d100 seems like the deal. Chevy parts on a dodge of that era isn’t rare as they still make the Chevy parts. Plus gm hei is a very common swap. The jag and Volvo at $1500 maybe but $3500 is a bit steep.

I genuinely can’t believe I voted for the Omni over the Volvo, but that’s just what I did. There’s a few different Volvo wagons I would prefer over this 850, so it just doesn’t pump me up quite like the Omni GLH.

DEFINITELY Dodge! That’s an awesome truck and easy winner for me. Then Volvo, then JAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAG,
then Omni

Was already leaning toward the Volvo, but when I read it has a manual transmission?

No contest. This baby is mine. : D

I love that Jaguar, but the Volvo is too good to pass up.

The logical answer is the Volvo, but the stupid guy (me) answer is the Jaguar. I don’t see how I would realistically own a car with a V12 engine any other way.

I am in a weird mood today. Strongly drawn to the V12 Jag; the siren’s call beckons for me to dash my time and wallet against the rocks…
The Omni is right up my alley and should easily be my choice.
I am not a truck fan, but that Dodge truck looks sweet!
But today, the 5-speed utility wagon with just enough comfort and sport seems to be ‘just right’.

I bought a very used base 850 wagon that was the same color as this one for my oldest son about 14 years ago and it became a part of the family, I was genuinely sad when it left our driveway after almost 10 years of faithful service along with some service headaches and one unfortunate accident.

Since I’ve had a Volvo my choice here is the almost ultimate Chrysler L-body, the Omni GLH with some of the the best looking wheels Chrysler offered during the 1980s.

The truck doesn’t do anything for me–although it would be handy to have a truck around I suppose–and I’m too sober to even consider the Jaguar but might reconsider it after multiple adult beverages.

Those ARE cool wheels. I seem to remember seeing them on some other Chrysler. The Omnis I had to drive for work back in the early 80s weren’t nearly as exotic.

I would love to know if any of these SS articles have ever led to a purchase.

I’ve been tempted a couple of times, but I already have a reliable, relatively low-mileage, paid off conveyance and only a one-car garage. SS is almost always a “what if” fantasy read for me.

Went Omni over the Volvo for simplicity’s sake. I was really tempted by the weird factor of having five cylinders and an actually useful layout.

Also I got bitten by the Fun Bug.

The GLH is local enough and cheap enough that it falls into that category where I would be very tempted to buy it if I didn’t already have too many cars, and now added to that, if I didn’t have a lack of liquid funds due to my last car purchase.

As much as I like old Jags, I already have three of them. Besides, there are plenty of cheap V12s around from that era if the desire to own one ever outweighs my common sense. A cheap GLH that runs and drives? Don’t see those ever, really. So, gonna make The Old Man proud and vote MOPAR OR NO CAR with the Shelby option this Friday morning.

I was going to vote D100 but I already own a truck so it came down to the GLH or the Volvo. I know the GLH will be much more fun but her bones might be already turning into dust so I’m going with the practical, high mileage but clean condition manual wagon.

While a double 5 boxy Volvo is pretty sweet, I’m too deep into Mopar to not take the GLH if I had the choice. Would I likely regret it? It’s an 80’s Chrysler, and I live in the Northeast, so in about 2 seconds.
But it’s an Omni. I need to show my local show-room clean Rampage* it’s got a relative nearby!
*Yes, I drove by one last month that I thought was a Fox body at first, to drive past and see a bed! Not an ounce of rust looked to be on it! I haven’t freaked out like I did right then like I did to an Aventador in the middle of the pandemic. Wild sights in the rust belt man!

I crave a V12, but the rationalist in me knows it would be better to spend more upfront and buy from a reputable seller.

The Volvo doesn’t do anything for me personally.

That leaves the two Dodges. I think that D100 is a gem, and I’ve always heard good things about the GLH and admired them. I’m sure a mint GLH would go for more than I’d want to spend.

I voted for the truck, but ideally I’d use it to tow the GLH home after buying it too.

I figure that total cost of ownership on an older Jag V12 is about the same ($ruinous) no matter what the sticker price is.

I’ll take the manual brick. And maybe wrap it like a BTCC car.
