Good morning! Well, you picked ’em; now you have to tell me what you want to do with ’em. We’re going to play the car version of everyone’s favorite celebrity parlor game. One of these cars will become your new track (or autocross, or dragstrip, or whatever) weapon, another will be your new daily driver, and the third must regrettably be given a Viking funeral.
Two winners from this short week were already locked in, so let’s find out what the third winner is. Voting was just about tied early on, but as the day wore on, the Mazda MX-3 emerged as a clear winner. The Subaru wagon had plenty of fans, but its slightly scruffier condition wasn’t a match for the gleaming Mazda. Seriously, how does that car have 360,000 miles on it?
The Subaru is tempting, but I think I’ll take the MX-3 too. I’ve had such good experiences with Mazda and Mazda-based cars that I have no worries about its reliability at high mileage, and I’m sure it’s a hoot to drive even without the trademark V6.

I trust you’ve all played the party game “fuck, marry, kill,” right? Someone names three celebrities, or musicians, or fictional characters, or whatever, and you decide which one you’d take to bed, which one you’d exchange vows with, and which one you’d send to the morgue. All theoretical, of course, and all in good fun. Well, this is the car version of that. There won’t be a poll today, because I feel like it would get too confusing with nine possible choices, so just post your answers in a comment, and I’ll tally them up and reveal the results, along with my choices, on Monday. Let’s revisit the cars so you know what you’re getting yourself into.
1983 Honda Accord LX hatchback

This old Honda, if you recall, has half a million miles to its name. It’s one of the highest-mileage cars we’ve ever looked at here, and the way the seller tells it, it still purrs like a kitten. It still looks good, too. It’s a one-owner car, and it’s clear that somebody really loved it. It does have a rebuilt title, but I get the feeling that whatever happened to it happened a long time ago.

The inside is pretty tired-looking, but that comes as no surprise. If you wanted to turn this into your track car, it doesn’t matter; you’d pull it all out anyway, most likely. For a daily driver, I guess it would serve fine. I mean, it’s not gross or anything, just worn. It seems a shame to waste a car this good, but if you like the other two better, do what you gotta do.
1991 Chevrolet Beretta GTZ

This beat-up Beretta hails from Florida, though it resides in Michigan now. It has been in a minor accident which did some sheetmetal damage to the left front fender, misaligned the bumper, and cost it one of its fancy wheels. It’s a shame, because otherwise it looks like a pretty nice car. It’s equipped with a 3.1-liter V6 and an automatic, instead of the Quad 4 and five-speed stick you’d expect in a GTZ, but it runs great.

Apart from some sun damage on the dash, the interior is in good shape, and those seats look comfy. This would make a decent daily driver, I think, especially if you have a nicer car you’re trying to keep the miles off of. I can’t see it being much of a track car, except maybe rallycross, at which it would excel, if my experience with a similar Grand Am this spring is any indication. I fully expect this to be the most common vote for burning, though. Poor Beretta.
1994 Mazda MX-3 RS

This insectile little Mazda MX-3 is another high-miler, with 360,000 miles on its odometer, and about half that on its current engine. It’s the four-cylinder model, but a twin-cam Mazda four can be a wonderful thing. These are good-handling little cars, and I could see how tossing one around an autocross circuit could be a lot of fun.

But the interior is pretty nice in this one, too, nice enough to spend every day in. And it should get really good mileage. Cars like this were sold as commuters with a little pizzazz when they were new, and it could still fill that role nicely, even with a bazillion miles on it. I mean, you could vote to burn this one, I suppose, but you’d make me sad.
So like I said, no poll today, because it would just get confusing. Make your choices, and leave a comment to let me know what you chose. One car to take to the track, or have fun driving in some other way, and make sure you tell me what you have in mind. One to use daily. And one, regrettably, to burn. Have a great weekend!

Track Mazda. Daily Honda. Burn Chevrolet.
Daily the Honda
Track the Mazda
Burn the Baretta
Track the Mazda, daily the Accord burn the Beretta
Swap the drive train on the Baretta with the 3.6 + 6 speed from a Camaro and take to the local dirt track it where I can trade some paint.
Daily the Honda (the devil I know)
Burn the Mazda. Sorry Mark, there’s more out there.
Track: Accord
Daily: Mazda
Burn: Beretta.
The Beretta would be a great candidate for tracking if not for the auto. The Accord would suck to daily where I live due to all the hills (my 2016 Mazda with 155 horsepower even struggles with some of them – one I even sometimes take to work drops it from 60 to 40 really quickly), but I know Crossville has a dirt track that is apparently very fun in older Hondas.
And frankly, I love Mazdas so I’d rather daily one.
Track: Mazda
Daily: Honda
Burn: Berretta
perfect
🙂
Track: Honda (because I do not care if it gets banged up)
Daily: Mazda (but only until the next CA smog check)
Burn: Beretta. I have experienced a rental Corsica.
Track: Mazda
Daily: Honda
Burn: Berreta
Oh man this is hard because I want all three. But if I have to choose:
Track — the MX3
Daily — the Accord
Burn — the Beretta.
I’m lucky enough to have driven all three of these cars (not these specific ones, but the same models.)
Burn the Accord. Too slow and old.
Daily the Beretta. I’m a taller guy, and like a bit more room, plus the V6 is peppy enough for use in modern traffic. I actually looked and you can still get the wheel, you just have to paint it white.
Lastly, track the Mazda. It handles the best and Zoom Zooms.
Being a California resident definitely colors the equation. As much as I am an absolutely massive Honda fanboi for the 80s and 90s I just can’t face smogging that thing every two years. Also, I have my concerns about unseen tinworm damage. And as much as the Beretta deserves to burn I could give it a proper track exit, all shiny and chrome without caring a whit about its eventual fate. The Mazda seems like an honest little car that would be kind of fun to live with. So…
Track the Chevy
Daily the Mazda
Burn the Honda
Track the Mazda (Autocross?)
Daily the Honda.
Burn the Chevy
… is what I was going to answer. But the Honda has earned an honorable funeral. So I guess…
Burn the Accord (samurai funeral? Is that a thing?)
Daily the MX-3 (‘cuz that’s the one I want to spend time in)
Track the Beretta (demo derby or the local dirt track races)
Here’s my unpopular vote and I’ll die on that hill:
Track: Beretta. The only V6, slushbox but also lighter than most other cookie cutter GM product with the same combo. The exhaust is something I like about these as well.
Daily: MX-3, best fuel economy and the only one of these with 2 airbags. It shouldn’t be much slower than the Beretta
Burn: Regrettably the Accord, but let’s be honest, it would be a worse daily and track companion than the other two. It’s old, tired, slow and has a carb and spaghetti mess under the hood you don’t really want to deal with for a daily. I did this for a couple years on a similar spec vehicle with 200K less miles, rebuilt engine, rebuilt clutch, rebuilt carb, yet it was still miserable for a DD. I took off my rose tinted glasses and I’m absolutely not dailying a 500K mile, non- special edition, carb’d Honda.
Send the Accord out in a blaze of glory while it is still on top.
Daily the Mazda. It is a good car. (pats the hood)
Track the Chevy at a demolition derby and finish what entropy should have done a decade ago.
I’d both track and daily the Mazda. It’s heartwarmingly cute and the interior looks like a genuinely nice place to be.
The Honda has a lot going for it but I’m not as fond of it. Track it? I guess. That’s not what it’s for though.
I have no problem consigning the Beretta to the crusher. I grew up in a small town with a Ford dealership one side and a GM concession on the other, so I spent a lot of time in this era of American cars doing a bad job of playing catch-up to their foreign rivals. No thanks. There’s no nostalgia there for me.
I refuse to play this game. No matter how I approach it, it’s always ending up with a charred Mazda (admittedly not one of my favourite offerings from the brand) and me somehow how taking and early 90s USDM Chevy to the track.
This games sucks and I’m not playing it, no matter how attractive the prospect of dailying that Accord may be.
Track the Mazda
Daily the Accord
Burn the Beretta.
The Mazda is in great condition and probably the better daily, but the Accord would not be easy to modify or as much fun as the Mazda.
It might have turned out different if the Beretta was a stick. But Auto so its out-o.
Track: MX-3
Daily: Accord
Burn: Beretta
Ditto.
Seems pretty easy. Track the Mazda, daily the Honda (God will frown upon any other use for an Accord), and remove the blight of the Beretta from this Earth.
I vote for the Accord. Quality and premium feel. The Mazda is probably fun but underpowered for what it is and too much plastic.
Track: Accord
Daily: MX-3!
Viking funeral: Beretta
DD the Accord, track the Mazda, and well, you can take a Chevy out of Florida, but can’t take Florida out of the Chevy. So…
Burn the Beretta, track the Honda, Drive the Mazda
I genuinely like all three of these cars. If the Beretta were in better shape, I would pick it to DD. If it were a stick, I would pick it to track. Sadly, it is neither, so in the spirit of the game I will give it the Viking funeral it deserves. Although if I played in real life, it would be a fabulous winter beater. Credit to commenter James McHenry for that excellent variation of the game.
I will daily that Honda, and track the Mazda. As I suspect will be the most common choices for those. That Mazda is way too small for a big guy like me to DD.
Track Mazda, Daily Honda…Winter drive the Chevy. Why go to all the work of setting fire to it just for spite, when you can still get use out of it AND slowly, torturously destroy it? You don’t even have to spend money on matches! Just let the department of transportation do a calcium chloride treatment for free!
Disclaimer: not available where it doesn’t snow or on the West Coast.
Oh, this is the right answer! I like this variation of the game!
I think this is the best answer, if you can save the Honda from the tin worm it would be a great daily!
Gawd – Berrettas 20 years ago had sun warped dashes, but these bodies were fairly resistant to the tin worm.
