These Are The Best Cars From Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’

Cs Odyssey Top

Last night, I saw Christopher Nolan’s three-hour long adaptation of O Brother Where Art Thou, set in the Bronze Age Greek world and titled The OdysseyChristopher Nolan is, of course, a very good director and takes great care to insure that everything seen in the movie matches his vision perfectly. The entire film is a testimony to one man’s very specific vision of a particular part of the world at a particular time and place, which means that everything that shows up on that screen can be understood to be very carefully chosen.

And, of course, that includes the cars.

Vidframe Min Top
Vidframe Min Bottom

Like every other bit of scenery, prop, environment, and the overall mise-en-scène, Nolan has clearly very carefully curated the cars that appear in the movie, and I think he (and, of course, his team of some of the very best car-casters in Hollywood) have done a brilliant job. The cars chosen were absolutely not chosen at random; there is always some deeper meaning behind them.

One of the simpler ones is what you see up top there, where a Heinkel Trojan was used in a scene that takes place near the end of the Trojan War that kicks off the events of the whole movie. Maybe the use of a Trojan in this context feels obvious, but I think it’s a clever nod to the overall themes of the movie.

Cs Odyssey 2cvsahara

Similarly, the long panning shot of a battlefield’s aftermath and impromptu graveyard, showing the devastating human toll of the war, is deftly balanced out by the inclusion of that rare and wonderful Citroën 2CV Sahara, one of the dual-engined four-wheel drive 2CVs.

The car is very much at home in that arid, rugged environment, and its militaristic simplicity heightens the tone of the scene and establishes the context further. It just fits, and is masterful car casting on Nolan’s part.

Cs Odyssey Toronado

At first I was a little taken aback by the use of an Oldsmobile Toronado in the scenes where the Trojan Horse, secretly packed full of Greeks (is this a spoiler? Do I need to do spoiler alerts for stories almost three millennia old?) is being dragged into the gates of Troy.

But, the more I thought about it, the more sense it made: there’s a power to the big V8 Toronado, one that reflects the power of Troy at that moment, during the actions that lead to their destruction. And, like the Trojan Horse, the Toronado holds a sort of secret, at least it did when it was first introduced, in the form of its front-wheel drive layout. I think that’s what Nolan is getting at here, and, as a gearhead, I appreciate it.

Cs Odyssey Volvo240

Nolan’s films are generally quite dark, something he has been criticized for in the past, and while I tend, generally, to agree that often his scenes feel too underlit and desaturated, sometimes there’s a Caravaggio-like chiaroscuro that these dramatically lit scenes take on that works phenomenally well.

Here we see a Volvo 240 with additional driving lights used to great effect in such a dark scene; you never really get to see the car clearly, and I think that just makes its use all the more powerful.

Cs Odyssey Amphicar

There’s a powerful scene of Odysseus finally making it back to the shores of Ithaca, where he is visited once again by the presence of the goddess Athena. The scene is one of finally getting a glimmer of hope after an incredibly long and torturous journey, and I love how Nolan emphasized this flickering spark of hope by having a yellow Amphicar swim by in the background, unmentioned but a potent reminder that this beleaguered man’s fortunes have, at least, the possibility of change, if he can live up to this long-sought outcome.

While I’d hesitate to say The Odyssey is a car movie, or even really about cars, I do respect the car casting and how appropriate and careful it all seemed to be. It would be really easy to make the cars feel like just some tacked-on afterthought in a movie like this, but Nolan managed to pull it off with an artful grace and an unexpected gravity.

Fantastic work. I definitely recommend you go see it, and if there are other cars that you think deserve special mention, let me know in the comments!

I was surprised Nolan didn’t choose a Peel P50 for the cyclops’s car.

If having a 2026 Ram 1500 tow the horse into Troy wasn’t bad enough! But when Matt Damon looked at the truck, then looked directly at the camera and said “Impressive!”, it was a bridge too far.

I thought Menelaus’ Hummer H3 suited the scene well; a smaller presence than Agamemnons H2 SUT but still a good fit for Spartan roads.

Torch, how did you miss that the Sirens all had Stingrays? Those v8 powered cars dragged a lot of Jorts wearing sailors down.

I also found it a very intriguing choice, perhaps to intentionally offset the other “on the nose” car castings in that the Cyclops had a Mini.

Finally, the inclusion of Poseidon rocking an air cooled Porsche (lacking any need for water) really had me thinking deeply

I think you are overstating Nolan’s attention to detail. Those helmets are definitely not up to Snell standards.

At the Philadelphia Fringe a few years back, one performance was the Odyssey performed in a Honda Odyssey while driving around the City. (Audience sat in the third row.)

Some characters would appear by calling in on the van’s phone. And they used the CD player for special effects.

I didn’t see it, but it sounded like a cool idea.

Could they do The Tempest performed in a Pontiac Tempest?

It would be easy to organize a road-trip operetta – you could listen to a Prelude or Ballade in a Honda, a Sonata in a Hyundai, and an Encore in a Buick.

Seen on my commute home the last two days, a Honda minivan with a bumper sticker that says “My Other Car Is An Iliad”.

It’s an exciting time for Honda minivan appreciation. Just two days ago as well, I saw an alabaster-white Odyssey with “ILIAD” in the same font as the original nameplate, on the opposite side of the hatch. Capital-C classy, like an Ionic column.
So I guess the electric Hyundai owners can get in on this.

Honda not doing a Pythonesque ad campaign with the Greeks using an Odyssey as a Trojan horse seems like a missed opportunity, somehow.

I thought the inclusion of the Rezvani Tank was a bit heavy-handed, but it did go really well with the costuming.

I posted in memes channel of our famous discord
he took 10 years to go from Troy to Ithaca, and it’s only a 3hr drive. Nolan’s version is not very believable in my opinion

How is it taking you three hours? Are you going the long way through Lansing or something? It’s just I-75 to Michigan 57W, then a short stretch north on US 127. It’s only 111 miles.

It’s three hours if you take NY-79 to NY-206 to I-80, but if you want to tour more of the Mediterranean you could take NY-13 to I-81 up to Syracuse, loop around Syracuse on 481, then the thruway I-90 past Rome, thru Utica and Ilion (old name for Troy), and still get to Troy in only three and a half hours.

Look, you gotta leave some digestion time between the Dinosaur BBQ in Troy, the one in Syracuse and Maxie’s in Ithaca.

Obviously, don’t start your journey at The Ruck.

Hello, Sam Altman? You should drive a Youabian Puma, which is the actual car Odysseus drove back in ancient Greece. His was converted to have a 20 liter 800 hp diesel from a tank, but I bet you could top that!

You missed the whole scene where on their way from Troy to Ithaca they stopped for gas and ice cream at the Stewart’s Shop in Oneonta? That was full of regular modern daily drivers.

Odysseus’s trying nights at the Herkimer Home and Mines are sadly missing from most modern translations of the legend.
Not to mention the criminal underrepresentation of the passage of Howe Caverns or their brief but memorable respite at that one A&W in Cortland with phones in the booths…

That trip only takes me about 3 hours, not sure why it would take anyone 10 years.

Though it is an arduous journey for sure. Interstate 88 is a real piece of shit. Sucker has been in an endless state of construction my entire lifetime.

Understandably many people recently took to social media to express their frustration with Christopher Nolan’s dubious casting decisions. Namely the hardly believable lack of a Honda Odyssey, to which this timeless story was so clearly dedicated.

Honda really cornered the mythological market. It’s not very well known, but even Jesus drove a Honda, he just didn’t talk about it much.

I have to assume it was an Aerodeck too, because it would take an extreme amount of humility to not speak of something so wonderful. They have a sunroof on the hatch! I’d be discussing that with everyone!

I don’t blame him, how would you explain a Honda accord to people from 2000 years ago? Not worth the trouble.

This is one of your more clever ones, for sure. It took me a few paragraphs to figure out what was going on. My scooter broke down this morning and I missed my normal train, so my brain isn’t on point right now.

I am surprised to see you failed to mention the main protagonist of the movie, since it is actually named after it.
