I really, really need to take down the mailbox to replace the wooden base (right now it’s a slightly too narrow board and a bunch of shims), put some kind of protectant on the bare wood, remove the remnants of the old numbers, sand + paint, then put on some shiny new numbers. I also need to tidy the garage. Inside the house, I need to start replacing the fluorescent panels in the laundry room, pantry, and closets. And I also have a rather large pile of stuff in the spare room that I need to sort for donation, including (possibly) some furniture. Someone will come pick that up, but I need to get it downstairs first.

Should I keep a toilet in there? A fridge? A dirty sink?

Absolutely keep the fridge and dirty sink! I have a full-size fridge in my garage; it’s great! Might not hurt to keep those cabinets in there too, at least until you have a better idea of what storage solutions are best for you.

When all is said and done, I will have spent more money in my mouth than I have spent on any car.

I only have one implant, but I have crowns on pretty much all the remaining teeth. It is nice to be able to bite into things though.

I think I hate her.

I know this was meant in jest, but I think I resent my orthodondists a little bit more every time I look back on the experience. I had traditional-style braces, and while they did straighten my teeth, they also accelerated a lot of deterioration (which one orthodondist was always very quick to blame entirely on me). Then the dentist who was supposed to make my teeth nice again pretty much destroyed every tooth in my mouth…amazingly, I only ended up losing one of them.

I would definitely keep the toilet and shower out in the garage. Maybe knock down those walls and make it smaller (or no wall?). I would kill (but probably not a human) to have a potty and shower in my garage… your wife will appreciate you being able to wash off all that grease and dirt and put on clean clothes outside.

This is trailbuilding season for me. Cool weather, undergrowth has mostly died off (except the @#$%ing buckthorn…), and the clocks haven’t changed yet so there’s still a little daylight after work. I’m trying to split time between my “backyard” trails (it’s technically community property, but I have permission to build on it) and the public trail systems here.

Should I keep a toilet in there? A fridge? A dirty sink? I’m definitely going to epoxy the floor and keep the air conditioning.

Unless something is in the way, leave it all! One of my favorite things about my new house is that the guest bathroom is right next to the garage door so I don’t have to track stuff all over the house before I wash my hands. In fact, the laundry room is right there too so I have on a couple of occasions come in from a project and immediately thrown my clothes in the washer.

Hearing about Griffin’s teeth made me involuntarily clap my hand over my mouth.

Griffin, I’m also worried you’re showing the first signs of dental erosion. Note the cutting edge of tooth becoming translucent and yellowing. This occurs when the white enamel thins and allows the yellower dentin to show through.

I’m telling you it was truly and sincerely one of the worst things I’ve experienced in my life.

And good looking out, I’ll talk to my dentist about it at the next appointment!

Picked up a decent safety razor at my local variety store ‘cos “vintage” is not something I seek out in personal-care products.

Wait! David Tracy with an actual physical dry garage!!! Are the Gods of Rust angry? Will the sun rise tomorrow? Can we even conceive that the ghosts of Michigan will finally rest?

Is there a spaghetti shower for emergency sustenance?

Do Americans judge other people’s teeth as much as they judge their own?
It’s just not something I usually notice about anyone I meet.

I had an ex who made one comment about the crowding on my bottom row but I never cared about it cuz I was always super happy with my smile otherwise. The only reason I got these is that my teeth alignment got entirely fucked up thanks to a mouthguard an ex got me and it was starting to create problems. I was bummed because I was happy to embrace a natural smile that was still quite nice

You should keep the bathroom in your garage Mr Tracy. Your wife does not want you to track dirt into the main house. When you’re working on your cars. Have the soap dispenser filled with GoJo Heavy Duty hand cleaner.

I’ve spent at least 20+ hours filling then sealing and then filling my massive driveway that was neglected for decades. Just putting on an audiobook and filling cracks is pretty zen during the last beautiful days of Fall.

In the winter I am foolishly going to attempt to build wooden bypass carriage doors for my garage. Was quoted $20k so for that kind of scratch I can make a LOT of mistakes and come out ahead. Sourced the hardware on McMaster for <$2k so that leaves $18k for wood and glass in the budget lol

When I saw “teeth” in the headline, I thought it was going to be about tacos.

I think this weekend I am heading to harbor freight to grab a couple of their power carving discs for an angle grinder and see if I can finish a stump in my backyard into a giant bowl (3ft diameter). I used a small chainsaw to carve out the middle to the best of my ability, I don’t have super high hopes for it, but it would be cool if I can make something. I loved that tree and it deserves better than just becoming firewood. Two weeks ago I milled about 8 feet of the trunk into thick slabs, so one way or another I should have something to show for my effort.

The competing project that needs to be finished before it gets too cold is to spray woolwax on my GX before winter, and I told myself I would do another transmission fluid change, but at this point I might just pay someone else….

I finally wired an IR sensor to an ESP32 last night and have it serving up a simple webpage to tell me how accurate the pendulum clock I am designing is. It’s only been on my list for 4 months. Now I need to attach it.

Razors last a ridiculously long time if you wash them out in a jar of 91% rubbing alcohol after you’ve finished with it. The blades actually stay sharp for a long time but their high surface area to mass ratio and constant exposure to moisture means they corrode extremely fast. The alcohol dip greatly reduces the moisture on the blades allows them to last. I’ve had razors go for over 6 months with daily use

Oh wow, that’s good to know. I use my double-edge blades far longer than I should anyway.

So what you’re saying is I should spray WD-40 on my razor every time I use it? 😉

It would make the blades last longer but I’m not sure about its health effects on human skin lol

This article got me to search about a razor that I got from my father. I always thought, without data, it was circa WWII. Looks like it is a Gillette from 1920. Has a Shick Krona double edge blade. In 1920, my father would have been 13. He probably got it later.

I had one tooth replaced with an implant. Two years and about 6k out of my pocket, after insurance paid so very little, it was done. In my case I will not do another one as I do have many good teeth left, and I am on the downside of the aging curve. In Mercedes’ case she does not have any? good teeth left, and most of her life ahead of her, so heck yeah! Get them implants and chomp down on all the great food out there. MMMM, ribs and corn on the cob.

I have 17 good teeth! Slightly more than half for my specific mouth (very small and without wisdom teeth). Never a cavity, sensitivity, or other dental issue, which is probably why the baby teeth lasted so long.

Sorry, my reading comprehension is lousy before at least one coffee and a small donut. My problem has been my molars which like to crack and break. What’s left of them are one implant with a crown, two others crowned, and three that have been a bridge since 2001. Come to think of it my molars are more machine than man. May the force be with you and your dental team.

Try Mach 3 disposables; they cost more than Bic but last a long time and do not cut your skin. be sure Mach 3 as I accidentally bought regular Gillette 3 blade disposables and these cut my skin on fist use. Either way, disposable or cartridge type, good razor blades are ridiculously over priced.

And if you want the Mach 3 experience with replaceable old school blades check out the Leaf razor. What I use the rare occasions I don’t just use a trimmer.

I’ve been using an electric razor for decades now. I used to also wet shave once a week or so, but don’t even bother with that now. It takes about the same amount of time each day, but doesn’t mess up my skin.
I’ve only had to buy one new electric razor in about 25 years, so I’m pretty sure I’ve saved money overall.
The overall shave probably isn’t quite as good, but I have fair facial hair, and it doesn’t grow fast, so I don’t have to try hard to be clean shaven.

Big fan of a fridge and a dirty sink in a garage. I could see a toilet, but it depends on how close the closest toilet is inside.
Make sure you can drain your cleaning solutions from your ultrasonic cleaner into the sink, I ran a copper line at my last place that had a sink.

I recently snagged a 1963 Gillette Slim on Ebay for $40, and it is the best $40 I’ve ever spent. Up until this point, I’ve been buying cheap disposable plastic razors. They don’t last long, I lose or break them often, and I have easily spent hundreds of dollars on them over the years. But that ends now, because look at this amazing contraption.

Welcome brother! I switched to a safety razor from the expensive MachXVIIY in like 2010. I’m mostly bearded now so I don’t shave often, but as someone who used to shave daily, it’s the pinnacle of male facial grooming.

I initially tried it, because blades were getting so stupidly expensive, after a few shaves I realized it was actually a nice experience, and went all in with two massive packs of 1000 Turkish steel blades for like $37 (I haven’t kept up on prices). It’s like 16 years later, and I still haven’t had to buy new ones. Dollar Shave club can suck it! Kinda makes me want to shave my beard off.

I’ve been using a long-handle Gillette for many years now, and I have a couple of backup shorties (one for my travel bag, one more just in case), and I’m still working through the blade assortment that I got with my first safety razor back in 2008. The single-blade safety razor is way more comfortable on my skin than an electric or a multi-blade disposable.

Same feelings on how nice they are to use, I just have two shorties.
