New cars! We all love seeing the latest cars and the soon-to-be-released models that will take to roads in the year ahead. Most exciting are actual surprises, completely unexpected takes that move a nameplate into a new direction, or even better, something as wholly and shockingly original as the GM Firebird III must have looked to the car buffs of 1959 (or 2026 for that matter. Even after more than six decades, that thing looks bananas).
Now, the NYC show isn’t really about wacky concept drops (boo), and I bet not even one 2027 model is spec’d with F-86 Sabre-style aero brakes as GM proposed for the Firebird III. So let’s consider some more down-to-Earth car desires from the gang:
Thomas Hundal: “The return of the Toyota Paseo Convertible.”

Seconded. What’s not to like?
Antti Kautonen: “A Chrysler New Yorker. It would be a Very Fancy Edition of the Charger with a formal roofline. Preferably with a vinyl top. I mean, anything else than a Pacifica…”

Stephen Walter Gossin is on the same Charger track:
With all of the talk in recent years about Chrysler only selling one vehicle, or possibly being shut down, I’d love to see that storied, old-school-cool brand get a product based on the new Charger platform. A 2027 Chrysler 300 2-door, with a Hemi and fuselage styling that looked like it came right out of 1971, but with modern engineering, would be glorious.

Your turn:
What Do You Wish Was Being Announced At The New York Auto Show?

Perhaps unpopular opinion but large(ish) coupes. Bigger than a Miata/BRZ, more practical than a RWD Mustang. Thinking along the lines of G6 Coupe, Monte Carlo, Accord Coupe, Sebring, Solara, etc that are capable enough to be a daily driver in all seasons (fwd or awd) and don’t have to be high hp rockets but just potent enough to be fun and certainly less boring than the current mix of crossovers.
I’m there w/ you.
See above.
I keep hearing about a new Celica, is that today? Yes I know what the date is today.
Hatchback Subaru WRX with 6MT
Ram Dakota Power Wagon
“What Do You Wish Was Being Announced At The New York Auto Show?”
Somebody is bringing back a small, regular-cab manual-transmission base-model pickup for $20K. Offer a 4-door, shorter-box model for $25K. $1K more for an automatic, but make the $20K base model available for fleets, delivery-drivers, auto-parts shops, locksmiths, painters, etc.
A Fiesta ST,configured as before, without any screens or touch-sensitive controls.
“Introducing the 2026 AMC Eagle!”
That would be so awesome…but they HAVE to do it the right way and make it look like the classic one. I’ll take an SX/4 please
Its 2026…we were promised flying cars…
I’d settle for one that folds up into a briefcase.
Backpack. One thing the Jetsons got wrong.
Honda Element/Toyota TJ Cruiser/hybrid version of that NYC taxi proto thing minus the ramp.
That the company formerly known as Fiat was going to sell Ram and Jeep to BYD, and go full in on Citroen and Peugeot in the USA.
No?
Cars painted orange. Could we have orange cars?
Yes, you may have a Dodge Charger.
Try not to put flag decals on the roof and doors.
Isn’t there some sort of insurance that covers me if someone leaves one in my yard?
Hypothetically, of course I don’t actually have a yard.
Yes, I believe most homeowners insurance policies cover post-storm rubbish removal.
Of course!
You only have to purchase an exclusive, unobtainable to mortal human beings vehicle, put down a substantial deposit and wait years to find out if you won the sales lottery to actually buy it and then wait for delivery is all!
A new MR2 that doesn’t cost $65,000 and is actually true to the original.
ie not 5k pounds. It can even by a hybrid if it has a great power/weight ratio.
No flying car this year?
Sigh…
And no Elio! Still!
The return of small cars from pretty much any manufacturer.
6 seat interior option for the Ram 1500 REV
Or better yet a height adjustable air suspension option and a 6 seat interior option for the upcoming F-150 Lightning REV (that are not mutually exclusive)
YES!!!!!!!!!!!! What is the hold up with getting an EREV into production in a full size truck/SUV. And, I also want a front bench seatesque for my pickup.
Instead of waiting and hoping for them to make it I ordered a Ram 1500 Big Horn Crew Cab 6’4″ Bed Truck with the 3.0L I6, 4 Corner Height Adjustable Air Suspension, and the 6 seat interior.
Honestly I have an extremely hard time justifying buying a modern “full size” (obese) pickup unless it has 3 seats per row MINIMUM!
GM Firebird III;
Good Grief ! Forgot it had that many fins ! If all are removed, along with the bubble tops, it’s not that far off from a Sting Ray. That. As an EV without any ADAS or proprietary software BS. If we’re dreaming.
Watch this, it’s pretty amazing

A V10-powered sport coupe. I don’t even care who makes it (please not VW).
Lol, what a monkey’s paw result for you that would be.
Devastating
A 1.3 liter 15,000 rpm straight eight front engine roadster that’s all I want.
Mazda and Toyota surprising everybody with a successor to the original IS300 and Mazdaspeed 6. It’ll use Mazda’s 3.0L straight six, sold rear wheel drive only as the Mazda 6 with an optional manual, and the Lexus IS300 would get a front electric motor with about 100hp and 50 miles of range but unfortunately would be sold as an automatic only. Some geniuses will eventually figure out that by combining the Mazda manual transmission and a Lexus GX driveshaft you end up with the same overall length as the Lexus drivetrain. As with the original IS300 and Mazda 6’s they can be ordered as a wagon, but these will rarely be stocked on dealer lots.
Porsche 718 Dakar!
I know it’s stupid. But also, rad!
A Buick or Chrysler 4 door land yacht sedan would be great. It should be something that handles relatively well, but has a smooth ride. I think the industry has forgotten about a smooth ride unless you buy a Mercedes S-class.
A fully production ready version of the new electric Elio 3 wheeler!
Aw, beat me to the Elio mention.
add your voice to the choir, there are dozens of us! DOZENS!
I was mine mini-thorium-reactor powered.
Mustang sedan. Preferably on the top of the Empire State Building, but I’m flexible.
Or any Ford sedan..give us the middle east Taurus!
A new Subaru Baja or BRAT.
Seconded
Thirded.
A hard launch date for Telo.
A manual transmission, RWD, NOT ELECTRIC, proper station wagon with a mildly sporting bent with no screens inside, and no jacked up delusions of butchness. I have one they can use as a model.
The love for the Paseo is certainly an “interesting” choice. I didn’t know cute hairdresser’s cars had such a following.
Yes. A thousand times yes to this.
In brown?
“Pontiac is BACK!”
