For years, rumors have existed about Ford mulling over the possibility of a Mustang sedan. Considering that a Mustang GT now costs $48,850 before options, and that young people don’t commonly have $50,000 to drop on a new car, a more practical variant for Mustang fans with kids who can justify a $50,000 daily driver but not a $50,000 weekend car would make a whole lot of sense. While this direction still hasn’t been confirmed, a recent trademark application is pouring fuel on the fire.
This week, Ford Authority discovered that Ford has filed an application to trademark the name “Mach 4.” As the outlet reports, “Filed on February 25th, 2025, under serial number 99055118, this application contain the goods and services description of “Motor vehicles, namely gasoline and electric automobiles, pick-up trucks, sport utility vehicles and their structural parts.””
That seems especially interesting considering Automotive News reported that dealers were shown a rendering of a four-door Mustang called the Mach 4 last August, in the same meeting where they were shown the now-confirmed Ford-sanctioned pre-built Mustang RTR. If one thing from that alleged meeting is very much real, who’s to say more things aren’t?

Adding fuel to the four-door fire is the categorization of the trademark application. See, it applies to vehicles and their structual parts, and considering the only sensible alternative use for the Mach 4 name would be for all-wheel-drive, it doesn’t seem like the trademark would necessarily apply to powertrain systems. While an all-wheel-drive Mustang coupe would be cool for those in snowy climates, it doesn’t seem to be on the table here.

In this context, it’s also worth noting that a 2023 agreement formed with United Auto Workers included the promise of a $50 million investment in Flat Rock, the plant that makes the Mustang coupe and convertible. More importantly, this promise came with the detail that a new product would join the floors of Flat Rock “pending program approval”. Now, sinking $50 million into a plant isn’t a lot for an all-new model, but considering that Mustang sheetmetal is actually stamped down the highway, it might go further than you might expect.

In a way, if the dream of a Mustang sedan comes to fruition, that would be as close as we could get to a modern day Ford Falcon. Sure, considering the original Mustang was based on the Falcon, the lineage would be a bit reversed, but many of us would love the possibility of a semi-affordable V8 rear-wheel-drive sedan with a stick-shift. While this idea might’ve been sacrilegious fifteen years ago, the sales success of the Mach-E crossover may have opened the door to other Mustang variants. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what happens, won’t we?

A Mustang sedan? So a Falcon? Seriously come on..
Ford has a history with expanding nameplates. Look at the Torino. So by logical extension, we shall see in the future a mustang coupe, a mustang sedan, and a mustang WAGON!
Hell Yes. It would be #1 on my list if it’s available when I retire.
Buuut- the back seat has to actually work. For grown-ass men.
Mustang wagon! (I can dream.)
(/Proper English accent) “Shooting brake, my dear boy!”
“Estate”
Is it going to be a 4 door Mustang, or is it going to be a 4 door sedan with Mustang branding?
Why don’t they just bring back the crown vic and then drop the mustang gt powertrain in there? I mean this is a really good opportunity to bring back the good ol’ american land barge sedans again.
Also, if I’m speed racer, I’m going to see a move to the mach 4 from the mach 5 as a bit of a downgrade.
Because the Panther is garbage.
Waiting for the Mustang Mach-o

It’s a terrible name, Mach 4 should mean awd in the Mustang. Call it the Falcon or Torino or hell even Cougar! Alpha-numerics are lazy for model names
That being said, I want one
ThunderFalconCougarBird
Yes! This! Ford, make it so!
Smarter Play here would be to use the basic Mustang architecture/drivetrain and make a new Lincoln LS out of it. Lincoln sorely needs to be more competitive with it’s European and even cross town rivals and the tarted up Escape is not it.
A 4 door Mustang is properly called Falcon, Maverick, Granada or Fairmont.
You’re welcome.
I’m ok with even Torino or Cougar! But Falcon is the obvious choice here
I vote for Granada. It’s about time Ford tried to compete with Mercedes Benz again.
Would it come with a medical degree?
That’s “Gra-Naa-Dah”
As in:
“Hello Mutha
Hello Fathah
Here I am at
Camp Granada…”
Not Gre-Nay-Dah
As in the island that Reagan invaded.
What is that? A door for ants!!! 😉
If this winds up having similar packaging to a Stinger or A5 I’ll put down a deposit the day it’s announced.
Yeah, it would be hard to say no to a 4 door Mustang.
I’ll be in line with you.
There are dozens of us! DOZENS!
Likewise. We have a 440xDrive GranCoupe right now (A5 5-door competitor) and would be all about a 4-door Mustang, and even more so a 5-door Mustang.
I’d love Toyota to respond with a GT86 with proper rear seats & access.
I’m fine with the tiny seats since I only use them as a shelf anyways but I’d kill for a hatchback.
I wouldn’t mind Ford coming out with a sports car smaller than the Mustang either.
And awd to make it a bit more practical. Why can’t we get a GT86/BRZ with awd and 4-doors. Just a simple request here.
Ok, one more thing, with the added weight of the 4-doors and awd can we throw in a turbo?
You’d have to. It wouldn’t even represent an 86 any more.
It would add too much proportional weight to that platform, IMO.
I love the idea of a Mustang sedan. However, I will temper my interest with the realization that Ford will inevitably bring it to market as an automatic-only model (complete with rotary shifter like in every other Ford SUV) with an Ecoboost 4/hybrid power train and an MSRP starting around $65K.
Yes, that was a horrid photoshop in the top image. 🙂
they already have a 4 door Mustang, it is surprisingly slow and decidedly not sporty, which is surprising since it is electric.
Yes, the Mach E exists but it’s taller and narrower than its namesake. It’s definitely not as sporty as the coupe (mostly due to the range-enhancing skinnier tires), but I wouldn’t say it’s slow – especially the GT model. Given how my home state of NJ is now not as EV-friendly as years’ past, I’d certainly consider trading in our Mach E for an ICE Mustang sedan if it makes financial sense. Based on my original post, however, I have my doubts.
Ford Blackwing??? Sign me up please (after my lotto payout, of course)
LOVE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!
There’s been a CT4V BW lapping at Ford’s test track. I believe they’re benchmarking it, which is fantastic news.
OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG
But should it be Ford? Or Lincoln. Mark VIIII?
Or are you looking for XV?
Yes, but those of us old enough to recall the 7’s and 8’s would likely not get the reference even if XV is technically correct.
This 70 year old understands your response.
Absolutely, give it a manual and an Ecotec Turbo 4. I already have a PP S550.
A new Mustang I can realistically buy again is a positive (company won’t reimburse mileage on coupes), but, I’m honestly out at $50k and also continue to have serious reservations about Flat Rock’s build quality, based on prior experience.
Even at those prices though, it shouldn’t have any trouble undercutting the competition, with a 25% tariff on the Charger (actually more, given retaliatory tariffs on components going to Ontario, and ones charged multiple times on parts that cross the border more than once for different manufacturing steps)
Sweet, this could be a nice alternative for the Model 3 Performance.
So the Mach 1, only came with 1 door?
After the other one got blown off by a Chevelle maybe.
I’m now picturing a Isetta with a 428 Cobra Jet swapped in.
I don’t know if a driver could even fit in that vehicle, so it’s probably not a deathtrap.
I’m still going with the Gillette Mach 4 being the very long rumored and speculated on AWD Mustang and not the sedan version which should be called Falcon, but what the hell do I know.
I hear the Mustang sedan will be a hybrid capable of running on electricity or the internet rage of Mustang purists.
Nothing wrong with this. Savvy use of the “Mach” designation to indicate this isn’t the coupe Mustang. If it keeps the rowdy two door alive for us to enjoy while still being entertaining to drive in it’s own right then it’s all good.
Welcome to 2025…
Where we are pretty chill with a Mustang Sedan, because all other brand equity goes on blob-shaped crossovers… including, ironically, the Mustang.
OMG, that top shot – my eyes!!
If you’re gonna paste in a tiny rear door like that, at least have the decency to make it a “suicide” door.
My money — literally, since I just (reluctantly) invested in Ford the other day thanks mostly to their 6% dividend yield — is that this will probably be the ICE version of the Mach-e, a way to diversify away from EVs just a little bit while giving consumers something a little more interesting than just another take on the Dodge Charger.
Longitudinal turbo 4 and V8 options, just like the real Stang. But also with AWD so people don’t forget it’s a crossover, too.
I was thinking that too, though the Mach-E was designed to be an EV from the ground up, so the battery is integral to the chassis bracing, and there isn’t a transmission tunnel for a rear drive shaft.
Also, Ford already makes an ICE Mach-E: it’s called the Explorer. The Mach-Es wheelbase is only 2″ shorter than the Explorer and trades boxy utility for curvy coupe looks. I love my Mach-E, and an ICE version would be interesting, I just don’t think it’s different enough from Ford’s existing lineup unless the Mach 4 was a true sedan.
Unless Ford’s ultimate goal is to have everything that isn’t a pickup be either a Mustang or a Bronco
Thankfully they got rid of the “everything starts with an F” naming convention. I highly doubt many people would want to buy a Fustang or a Fronco
Thank you for that, I don’t want to buy them either but I’ll call them that from now on.
All good points, but Ford would be far from the first company to build overlapping models — it would be all about the positioning. 2 rows (not 3 like Explorer) and on a purpose-built plaform…possibly a stretch Mustang if that’s possible, but definitely not an actual Mach-E for the reason you mentioned. I just meant the same market positioning, but in ICE form. I think that’s more likely than just “Ford builds a cheap Audi S5”
This seems way more likely than introducing a new sedan in the late 2020s.
