How To Add The Autopian As A ‘Preferred Source’ On Google

While Google may be doing its best to disrupt the lives of publishers, YouTubers, and anyone else who does business on the Internet, it is offering a tool that allows you to set The Autopian as “preferred source” on its platform. Is this worth anything? I have no idea, but it’s probably helpful to us if you click this link and add us as a preferred source. It’s also one of the best ways to get some of the most incredible tailight-focused news into your life.

That deeplink should auto-generate “The Autopian” as an option. If you’ve already got a list of preferred sources, you can make us the newest one on the list. If not, you can add other sites that you find as trustworthy as The Autopian (Cat Fancy, Einkommende Zeitungen, etc.). I presume we’ll be at the top of the list.

Once you do this, Google says “you’ll start to see more [Autopian] articles prominently displayed within Top Stories, when those sources have published fresh and relevant content for your search.” Great. This only works in the United States and India, for now.

If clicking on a link is not appealing to you and you’d rather click a button, you can also do that here:

As a reminder, we’ve also lowered the price of our monthly membership to just $5 if that’s appealing to you. Thanks!

Same here. I use the free version of Google Workspace (no longer available, I signed up years ago) and I think that’s why. I’ve noticed more basic features unavailable to me (can’t leave reviews on Google play, for example), I think they’re trying to push people grandfathered into the free version out.

I read this site daily and scroll through all the titles. I come here enough that when I type “the” in the address bar it autocompletes to this site’s URL.

I don’t know, man. I’ve seen your takes on Puffalumps before.

(j/k, this is a great idea using a feature that I didn’t know existed)

I’ve been trying my damndest to get google out of my life for the past 2-3 years now. Clicking the links prompts me to login to my google account, which no longer exists unfortunately.

I do support what you’re trying to do, and I support (so very much more) getting google untethered from being the most powerful entity in internet advertising.

Good luck. I can’t create an account just for this purpose but I do support the effort.

Yes, and they never bother saying what they even mean by a googly account!
I get stopped at that point with anything requiring that, like YouTube.
Insane to discourage using your system, but that’s the way book face went too.
You may be interested to know I’ve never heard of the googly software you have referenced as a news feed that has been problematical for Autopian.
I ran across you using a Japanese news feed called smartnews.
I use the European or world version.
I don’t even know how I found it.
The benefit is it is tunable in preferences, though I liked it’s earlier version before changes.
Could googly be related to why I had trouble getting into discord, finally did, then suddenly it didn’t work even though Autopian was still listed in my account?
I’ve has disqus access for years, if that is relevant.

Anyway, you have market access out there you may not be aware of.

I just tried to use the googly preference thing, in hopes it would give Autopian an edge, but either I don’t have one or googly doesn’t recognize me.
Someone told me a gmail address is what’s required. Don’t know?
I had to use that just to activate my TV.
We all know googly never forgets

India is the fourth global superpower, so it makes sense.

India has the highest population in the world, isn’t China where Google doesn’t operate in, and isn’t the EU where there’s much stricter data laws which vary by country.

RSS is the real answer.

Relying on google to maintain a setting that might affect ad revenue if it gets too popular isn’t for me.

It’s too bad that RSS appears to be a technology that is already dead and also continuing to die even further. I haven’t opened my OldReader account in forever at this point.

Not dead yet! I’ve been using a combination of Feedly and Unread for years now. They all work fine.

To assume they’re dead just works into the preference google (and others) have that you use the experiences that contain more ads. It’s been a long time since I ran into a site that *didn’t* have an RSS feed still available.

Smart RSS readers like feedly will actually generate feeds from sites that dont have a formal .rss / .atom / .xml feed

Done. I will say as an old millennial I am feeling increasingly out of sync with the internet and tech trends at large. I wouldn’t have had any idea there was a way to manipulate google content beyond “if you pick the clickbait ads with well endowed singles in your area you are likely to see more ads of said singles in your area”.

I often change locations to get different information.
Even Wikipedia is different in other countries.
My software is often confused by this, which I mostly encourage.
Lately I’ve had searches tell me I don’t live where I do (govt site) and streaming block me for being in a slightly different part of the state.
Could this be a googly issue?
Unfortunately my phone has a strong googly content I wasn’t aware of when I got it.
And Microsoft seems to have finally been successful in bricking my version 10 laptop.
Any suggestions for a tablet, preferably one that isn’t more costly than my last truck!
And ideally not by googly or Amazon.

Mostly replying to commend your use of the word “googly”, which I had to manually re-type 3 times before my iPhone accepted my input as intentional.

Can’t get a decent size keyboard on this phone, so I have to use autocorrect, but since AI came along I have to fight with it constantly myself!

In addition if you use MSN as a news site search Autopian and hit follow went from 0 stories to all stories though I wait until I get home and relax while catching up.

I’m beginning to think The Autopian may be a psyop. First I enter my CC details and now here I am adding them as a “preferred source” in Google. Is world domination next???
