Purple Is An Underrated Car Color

Underrated Purple Ts4

The current state of the automotive palette is a bit of a shocker. Look in any parking lot and there’ll be a sea of almost non-color, as black, white, gray, and silver dominate.

It’s not your imagination either: at least 70% of new car registrations in 2025 comprised those four colors in the USA and in the UK. Only blue gets into the top five on both sides of the Atlantic, adding up to a combined 85%.

Vidframe Min Bottom

New car buyers overwhelmingly opt to play it safe, it seems to save money on expensive paints and for wider appeal when it comes to selling it on, but they can also only buy what car brands offer. That becomes a vicious circle too: the brands don’t spend money developing interesting paint because it won’t sell, and it doesn’t sell in part because they don’t offer it.

Bentley Continental GTC Purple Supernova Ombre
Bentley

It doesn’t have to be this way, as a press release from Bentley reminded us. The British brand recently celebrated its 80th anniversary at its Crewe HQ, and the opening of a new paint shop by Princess Anne, by launching a one-off Continental GTC in “Purple Supernova Ombre.”

Although few brands offer it these days, purple is the underrated automotive paint shade, and while marques like Bentley can come up with whatever paint they want for their six-figure luxury cars, there have been some pretty spectacular examples of purple cars in more mainstream stuff over the decades.

It’s a color that makes bad cars interesting and good cars even better, and I’ve pulled out some favorites to hopefully poke a few manufacturers into realising their designs deserve more than monochrome.

97prowler
Stellantis

When Chrysler decided to build a literal hot rod in the late 1990s, it needed a bold color to match that whole vibe. Prowler Purple was a deep metallic shade that helped drive the message home when the Plymouth Prowler concept was revealed in 1993, and every single Prowler that rolled off the assembly line in its first year (1997) was finished in this vibrant violet hue. Its semi-sibling PT Cruiser later sported a very similar color.

Nissan Skyline GT-R
Broad Arrow Auctions

While Bayside Blue was the default color choice for the R34-generation Skyline GT-R, it was Midnight Purple II that really showed off the car’s physical form.

There have been three generations of Nissan’s Midnight Purple, and although it started with the R33’s subtle, mostly black shade, it wasn’t until the II and III that the purple shone through. Nissan even leaned on the heritage of Midnight Purple for a new color for its run-out models of R35 GT-R, too.

BMW M3 (G80) Techno Violet
BMW

The E36-generation BMW M3 is usually remembered for moving the M3 game on from its four-cylinder origins to the straight-six era, but it also birthed one of the M Division’s best paints and with one of the better names here: Techno Violet.

It was such a good color that BMW replicated it almost faithfully for a celebratory model as one of the five exterior options for the M3 50 Jahre – and left it off the corresponding M4 model.

25tdi Brzac079 Copy E1785502609547x
Subaru

For a brand usually known for its blues, Subaru sprang a bit of a surprise when it announced a limited-run variant of its rear-wheel drive sports coupe finished in Galaxy Purple Pearl. Although it only offered 500 cars (dubbed “Series.Purple”) painted in the hue, it was a pretty spectacular finish that complemented some of Subaru’s earlier “Series.[color]” cars.

So far so good, if you want performance cars and coupes, but Honda was democratizing purple in the 1990s too with the absurdly named Royal Grape Purple Metallic. As far as we can tell, it was applied exclusively to the domestic four-door Honda Civic Ferio in admittedly upper-tier Vi-RS trim but again provided a fabulous splash of deep purple to the car parks of its native Japan.

Volkswagen Golf VR6
Manor Park Classics

The third-generation, five-door Volkswagen Golf wasn’t the most interesting car to look at – no hating here, I learned to drive in one – even in the more potent trims, but once again purple shows how very different a car can look in the good color. Dusty Mauve Pearl wasn’t a spectacular name, but the color itself was one of those that really pops in the daylight. Of course it helped that it was only available on the VR6 Highline …

Jeep Gladiator
Stellantis

Although the pun is almost enough to disqualify it, Jeep’s Prince-ly purple “Reign” shows that even off-roaders and trucks can get in on the game. Originally introduced in 2022, only a few years after its first-ever purple, Reign was initially only available on the Wrangler on a limited basis.

Stellantis brought it back “by popular demand” on the Wrangler and Gladiator for 2026, which at least shows that, even in the current grayscale automotive landscape, if brands make interesting colors, people will buy them.

Rivian’s Borealis is really nice. Shame you’ve got to get the top trim on the R2 and then still pay $2k on top of that for it.

Worth it. That color over the white interior is really unique.

FINALLY, someone said it! Purple is my favorite color, and I think it looks fantastic on most cars. A good bright metallic blue is a very close second for me. My Forza Horizon garage is composed of mostly purple and blue cars.

You call it underrated. I call it inviting disparaging and funny comments. A friend’s father had the brilliant idea of painting his vintage El Camino purple. Instantly, we began calling it the “Purple Pimp Wagon” and the “Smurf-Mobile”, among other things.

I like it…Smurf Mobil. It rolls off the tongue well. Besides, they were kind of a deep blue. Close enough.

We’ve been looking a new van, and the colour pallette is greyscale. At least the upper trim Toyotas have some actual colours.

The irony is if we get a Carnival, we are going with Ceramic Silver, which is battleship grey.

There is a metallic purple M2 that parks in the same downtown garage as I do when I am at work. I am not afraid to say that car in that colour has become an object of desire. Even lust.

If automakers didnt charge $2k for anything other than 2 paint colors there would be more variety out there.

It’s a lot more than $2k since they’re a lot more willing to drop the price on an in-stock vehicle versus a special order.

Yes more colors please!!!! The main thing I miss about my BRZ is the yellow. Now I may have to wrap my boring silver Miata. Both because I hate boring colors and to improve visibility, I’ve had it less than 2 months and almost been hit 3 times…

Don’t count on the color fixing that. I had a bright orange FR-S that may as well have been invisible (and was apparently entirely invisible to the texting 20-something that totalled it).

Wife was driving it. Got punted off an interchange at 75mph into a berm. She was shaken up but fine car was not. it was kind of cool to drive into the active accident scene in my Miata to pick her up.

Of course, I should have brought her home instead of dropping her off at work. Live and Learn.

I wasn’t a fan of the grey Bronco with the pink accents earlier this week, but I’m completely on board with purple.

In fact I’m completely on board with colors in general. Fewer grey cars, please.

beyond the obvious Mystichrome Terminator Mustang Cobra color, the S550 had Mischievous Purple in the last year or two of its run, and the current S650 has Molten Magenta (I would declare that purple adjacent)

Fly into the rising sun
Faces, smiling everyone
Yeah, she is a whole new tradition
I feel it in my heart

My Honda from Tokyo
She makes me see
My Honda from Tokyo
She’s so good to me

Talk about her like a queen
Dancing in a eastern dream
Yeah, she makes me feel like a river
That carries me away

My Honda from Tokyo
She makes me see
My Honda from Tokyo
She’s so good to me
But I’m at home and I just don’t belong

So far away from the garden we love
She is what moves in the soul of a dove
Soon I shall see just how black was my night
When we’re alone in her city of light

Rising from the neon gloom
Shining like a crazy moon
Yeah, she turns me on like a fire
I get high

My Honda from Tokyo
She makes me see
My Honda from Tokyo
She’s so good to me
My Honda from Tokyo
She makes me see
My Honda from Tokyo
She’s so good to me

And, of course, there is Plum Crazy. Or In-Violet.

Tangentially related: despite the Schwinn Stingray Krate colors looking like a bag of skittles, there was never a Grape Krate. Not until reproduction bikes.

It is a bit polarizing like yellow and some greens. But Nobody seems to hate a lot on a plum Crazy Purple Mopar. I mean maybe on the owners for how they drive the cars, but the color is usually complimentary.

My ’05 xB was Black Cherry Pearl which was definitely just purple.

If they brought back the first gen xB I would buy two tomorrow. One to drive and one to store for when the first one started to develop ‘cheap car driven in salty winter’ problems.

My first gen Tacoma (aka, the Purple Throbber) agrees!

It was discussed in the earlier Prowler article, but that Prowler Purple (basically an updated Plum Crazy Purple) might as well have been the default color, it even almost made the PT Cruiser look acceptable.

Seeing a Midnight Purple R34 makes you realize just how special that color is on that car. Pair it with some bronze wheels and it’s just, chef’s kiss…
