Let’s Try To Identify This Steering Wheel Used On A Wooden Playground Race Car

Who feels like doing something frivolous? You do, that’s who. Frivolous, but also frightfully important. It’s Car Part Identification time again, where you get to exercise the vitally important part of your brain in charge of being able to visually identify car parts! According to our medical intern, this is the same part of the brain responsible for feeling when someone is looking at you, so it’s a crucially important part of your brain to keep healthy.

Today’s challenge involves a steering wheel, one repurposed to be part of a piece of playground equipment. This bit of playground equipment was spotted at the campsite we stayed at by Watkins Glen yesterday as we traveled for our big Lime Rock Members Only Track Day. It appears to be a sort of racing machine, with big Mickey Thompson racing tires at the rear and some skinny ones up front that look like they could fit on my 2CV.

I’m not really sure this format of racing car has a real-world analogue, though it does feel like a Mario Kart racing kart, constructed all out of weathered wood.

It’s a novel bit of locally-produced automotive-themed racing equipment, and I appreciate that. So let’s look at the one actual car part, aside from the tires, used on this thing:

That’s not some playground-equipment knockoff wheel. This is the real deal, from an actual, functioning automobile. So, the question now is: can you identify it?

I think you can. I say this because I’m pretty sure I have, and I think all of you are as capable of such inane feats as me. But it wasn’t that easy. Still, I suspect there will be those of you who might get it almost immediately. I’m curious to see how it plays out, so, as always, please be honest in the comments for, you know, science.

And, if you’d like the answer – or, at least, what I believe is the answer, click here!
