Ha! Now I have something to blame for my difficulty in finding 2nd gear in your 2CV, Torch! It’s that damned improper oil you put in it, you PHILISTINE.

I knew there had to be a reason that didn’t involve any shortcomings or character flaws on my part. I knew it.

Whew! I was worried it was one of my unhinged comments that inspired an article.

I actually remember both that article and that comment.

What the commenter failed to take into account is that ANY current oil is better than whatever was available when the 2CV was designed.

And guaranteed the French farmers that used then poured whatever was left over from their machinery into the crankcase and gear case.

This is why I like my Mini. The engine and trans share the same oil, pretty hard to mess it up.

I always assumed they lubricated the entire car with egg yolks. Why else did they always seem to be driving around with eggs in the seat?

Cause the eggheads that designed it are total basket cases.

Please, these are the French! They used only freshly made hollandaise.

For an old-school four-speed, I just grab some cheap Penngrade GL4 and call it a day. If I live somewhere cold and it’s a 5-speed, I’ll go Pennzoil Synchromesh.

But that’s not really the point here. What fascinates me so much is just how invested in the rage and contempt this commenter is.

XKCD 386. You don’t even need to look it up. You already know which one it is.

You call yourself an auto enthusiast?! Everyone knows you should be using clam juice instead of gear oil.

Ya big ol’ ding-dong. Yeah, I said it.

Eww, clam juice or mellow yellow? I guess it’s a tastier choice.

Clam-juice?!? You sorry-bottomed, son-of-a-bassalope’s uvula!!!

Clamato juice is the only SAE/IFAWA/UNESCO approved crustacean-based lubricant recommended for multi-viscosity applications.

I share the feeling you have about wanting to buy locally, and especially oil. My TR6 and my CJ5 both need Zinc in their oil, and I can buy it locally, though it’s all now expensive…but I choose to buy it from The Roadster Factory online, as they have the best quality British replacement parts that I can regularly find, and I like supporting them. But $13 a quart?…

For GL-4, Redline MTL is your huckleberry. I’ve run it in everything from a 1960 Ford 1 ton with a 3spd T-18, a 74 VW Westy, and a 77 Datsun 280Z. It isn’t cheap, but it makes a noticeable improvement in smoothness.

Now that you’ve mentioned viscosity, I had food poisoning and a cold this past weekend, and some of the stuff that came out looked like 140 weight, but had the stickiness of assembly lube.

Oh, this is not what you had in mind as far as a shitpost…

I recently started Twitch streaming (it was a fun project I took on with my teenage kids – “make Dad into a Twitch streamer”) and we were lucky enough to cultivate a chat that has been largely positive until last weekend, when I had to reach out to a friend and gently remind them to keep it positive in my chat. It really makes a difference in the overall vibe. This place is special. You guys are VERY fortunate. When my article went up I was super nervous until the commenters finally weighed in.

If you want to feel really good about yourself, check the comment section in any website that covers professional wrestling. Wow. Just wow.

You should at least disclaim to them that you’re an idiot.

If the commenter had done their research, they’d know that you REGULARLY claim to be an idiot! Sheesh.

You are all wrong. Be like me throw rotella t6 in every thing. Us it as engine oil, gear oil, automatic and manual transmission oil, brake fluid, washer fluid, coolant, a nice cold drink on a warm summer day, for my blood transfusions, the list just goes on and on. /s

But seriously I do use it as the oil in majority of my cars FJ, the Firebirds and the D250 (that uses it both in the engine and trans)

Also the OG commenter needs to be hit with a “Daddy Chill” gif

The only baby poo viscosity I remember are the ones about as thick as water that escaped the confines of the diaper and shot up their back; a true blow-out.

Now about that picture, I would assume it was Jason cosplay as the Statue of Liberty in honor of a French car.

I put valvoline high performance 80w90 gear oil in my GL-4 transmission because it’s deactivated sulfur and also Muncie SM420s are about as precise as a dirty muzzle loader

Two articles containing “lugubrious” in one day. It’s getting pretty fancy round these parts. I might have to replace my glasses with dual monocles to read articles.

There are a number of studies that involve the viscosity of baby shit, with some sources…

I do not, at all, want to see any of those studies, but the simple fact you would look this up justifies the membership cost.

Your teenage son’s rant about the lubrication choices you make? Just part of the Otto Cycle.
