I needed a good laugh. I’m sitting here waiting for X-ray results because my right hip joint feels like someone forgot the lube.

Are we talking specifically about lukewarm human baby shit? Would baby bird shit be too corrosive?

The uric acid would probably be hell on the yellow metals. Reminds me of that meme with the blackbird or starling or whatever glaring at the camera in wide view and then in a choker shot:
“Nice car ya got there… it’d be a shame if someone LUBRICATED IT IMPROPERLY!”

Does he know that he is yelling on the internet at someone who cut batteries in half with a chainsaw?

Came here to say this. If that guy had seen that video, Torch would have had to change the locks and hide Otto at a boarding school.

Remember that the lube you make, is equal to the lube you take. Peace.

Having spent an embarrassing amount of time on car forums since the wide adoption of the internet, I can say the number of car weirdos who get obsessed over oil brands, viscosities, etc. and generally based on purely anecdotal data is astounding. Asking “what oil should I use?” on any car site is like pouring gasoline over the floor of a dusty grain silo filled with airborne particles and tossing in a lit Molotov cocktail.

Along those lines, The Motor Oil Geek on youtube is the only guy I’d listen to.

I have to think some of these oddities are bots. Sewing discord is their design intent.

I agree. I’ve seen a few unrecognized names that show up with unreasonable and unprovoked hostility and I just assume that’s what they are.

Back on the other car site, there were a couple commenters (at least I think it was two different people) that were sort of like this. One would pop up on the car buying articles to insist that he would never buy a car from dealer that offered anything other than MSRP, because being willing to offer a number other than what was on the sticker was a sign of dishonesty. The other showed up on Hyundai/Kia articles, especially those that listed the warranty as a benefit to those brands, to insist that the 10 year warranty was a reason not to buy the car. Any brand that tried to lure you in with things like that was not to be supported. In both cases, especially the first one, it wasn’t just expressing an opinion but protracted exchanges to try and convince us all to their way of thinking. Point is, people choose some real weird hills to die on.

Man this takes me back 25 years to a forum post where I had mentioned filling my Focus MTX75 transaxle with 75W-90 (instead of ATF) to quiet the woodpecker chatter after installing an 8.5lb aluminum flywheel in place of the stock 22.5lb one and I was assured by someone that it would be like shifting through cement…even though I was regularly driving the car and could attest it was just as smooth as the factory filled fluid.

It’s not enough to think I’d choose a different approach. I have to be RIGHT and they have to be WRONG.

Harvey Firebirdman reminded me of this, but it’s such a great read I had to make a top level comment to share:

(tldr: Torch should have just put some Fluid in there… tick. tick. tick.)

Good on Torch for getting the 2CV up and running. A dead car is an ignored car… and as stated, winter drivability is a tomorrow problem. Any no/low sulphur oil should work. IIRC I sent over few compatible specs in the original comments.

Yeah, he has multiple cars. If it shifts poorly, oh well, grab a different car in the winter.

This being my day off I was able to consult with some experts on this.

Johnny Carson weighed in on the overall quality of Autopians, comparing them to a live studio audience, “They can’t all be gems.”

Elwood Blues had this to say about the relationship between an artist and their audience, “Don’t try to understand ’em; just rope and throw and brand ’em.”

Dr. Ruth Westheimer had a bit of insight into the mental composition of this particular commentator, “Bad people are a result of bad sex.”

As one such “occasional belligerent jackass,” I’m very grateful that my shitheadery hasn’t yet needed to be weeded out.

My handle even used to have “Ass” right in there, so everybody would see the BS coming before becoming incensed, but people just thought I like butts, so I ditched it and now I have to choose more carefully my words. #adult

It’s a really formulaic response too.

– You did something I don’t understand or don’t like.
– Technobabble that usually, either subtlety or blatantly doesn’t really matter. Usually misses the overall point. But see how much smarter than you I am?
– Personal insult/attack.

There does seem to be a portion of the commentariat that really has issue with the shade tree, just keep it running, low cost style of wrenching that many of the writers here practice. And not just “I wouldn’t do it that way” but something that seems to really make them deeply upset. I see it on a lot of DT’s articles, especially the challenge articles. It started elsewhere and seems to have followed to here. I’ve often found it puzzling too.

At least we’re not at epidemic levels here yet. I used to frequent stangnet when I first got my Mustang, but eventually left b/c I couldn’t stand yet another flame war over the “correct” rear end gears and people insisting that no, drag race spec ones are not only perfectly fine but actually damn preferable for your mom’s everyday driving you complete moron…

I think because it’s an easy stance to take, and people like being “right”.

For example, if you didn’t torque to spec:
I get to be right by citing the manual, the engineers that designed it, references to bolt design and thread pitch angle, materials analysis, etc.
There’s so many wonderful ways to tell you how smart I am and how wrong you are.
You have to try to prove that it’s “close enough”, and will be “fine”.

/even though anyone not a crotchety ass will know that it’s close enough and will be fine.

Or what about when the specs are wrong? I’ve seen that too many times. Almost lost an engine to a published low spec on a crank pulley. i think that’s the difference between the people who have only read about things and those who have actually done them and sometimes had to do them under non-ideal conditions and with a lack of money for a “proper” fix. Don’t tell anyone, but I over-torque my wheels by 10 pounds. Done that for nearly a million miles and never had to re-torque alloy wheels after a change nor broke a stud, not even ones on high mileage Subarus with notoriously weak wheel studs.

I never thought I’d see graphs of the viscosity of baby poop. And actually relevant to something. Since laughing is supposed to be healthy, thanks for the continued personal health boosts.

I feel this could be next year’s member’s t-shirt, basically combining the post and Otto’s fictional retort.

“How dare you put that viscosity of oil in your 2CV?? Have you no scruples at all?! I bid you good day. GOOD DAY SIR.”

I dunno, I think there are organisms roving the net who thrive on becoming outraged and actively seek source material to fuel that feeling. Granted some who exhibit this behavior have financial motivations and are just looking for clicks. TBH I love Autopian for it’s innocent love of cars, it’s like a bunch of 9 year olds geeking out on cars with no concern for looking cool.

I happily went no contact when I caught my dad using a JIS screwdriver on what was clearly a Phillips screw. Sometimes, I still feel like I wasn’t harsh enough…

One time I witnessed my father using an unapproved container for gasoline. The disgust and anger that coursed through my body was nearly overwhelming. It’s been nearly 20 years since that day and I’ve not spoken to him once.

I want people to be free and happy to say whatever they want.

Appreciated, but if they’re combative jackasses like that loser they should get the banhammer immediately. That was not an off-the-cuff comment; there was intent.

Arguably they should further be held captive in metaphorical stocks in the town square so we can fling rotten vegetables and/or eggs at them.

I’m from South America (formerly South Park), so I like to hit RECIRC and smell my own farts! I’m joking…

…but the viscosity of that air is slightly closer to the consistency of baby shit than just fresh air, and I’m not talking about the long-running NPR show.

That must be brutal. My car often chooses recirc at start up on warmer days because programmers are dicks and I don’t usually think about it because the button is largely hidden by the shifter, but I remember it when I suddenly realize that the air has turned to cotton candy.
