Two Readers Just Invented A New Kind Of Country Song: COTD

Heartlikeadodge

One of my favorite things about country music is just how much everyone loves singing about trucks. There’s a country song for pretty much every truck that has ever sold in America, and you know what? I unironically adore these songs. So, I really want to hear this idea that a pair of readers came up with.

Jason wrote a Cold Start about Dodge’s centennial commercial, and 10001010 rolled in with a great comment:

Vidframe Min Top
Vidframe Min Bottom

All the cool Dodges I grew up with were actually Mitsubishis.

JVDS made it even better:

That sounds like a sad car themed country song.

Vehicle Owner

In other news, Brian wrote the awesome story about how one GM EV1 escaped the crusher. Apparently, GM had to resort to some sneaky tactics to get the car back. Sid Bridge:

GM: Hi there! I’m here to pick up your EV1 for it’s monthly gas tank cleaning!
Jonathan: Oh, thanks, I… wait a second. No.
GM: Crap.

GM: Hi there! We’re here to do a quick satisfaction survey on your EV1. While you answer a few questions, do you mind if we check it for termites?
Jonathan: Yes. I mind.
GM: Crap.

GM: Hi there! Congratulations! You’re EV1 has been award the “Best EV1 in Colorado Award!” All we need to do is get it over to the studio for a few pictures…
Jonathan: Really! That’s so cool! I’ll… hey. Wait. No.
GM: Crap.

GM: Hi there! I’m here to pick up your EV1 and take it back to GM headquarters where we will destroy it. You mind handing me over the keys?
Jonathan: Are you even trying anymore?
GM: Just give me the car? Please? Will you? Please?
Jonathan: Well…
GM: Yeah?
Jonathan: No.
GM: CRAP!

GM: Hi there! I brought a fruitcake.
Jonathan: No.
GM: CRAP!

The Bishop wrote about the Pontiac Fiero’s propensity to get extra spicy. But Tyler Durden points out something great:

The most under-appreciated part of this piece is: “…the postman drops the latest issue of Taillights Monthly into the box.”

Have a great evening, everyone!

Last week I was talking with a friend I hadn’t seen in a year and kind of updating him on life. I realized it all sounded like a cliche country song: wife asked for divorce, moved out of my house, business tanking, dog terminally sick, my Jeep died, and I crashed off my dirt bike separating my shoulder. I take some solace knowing it at least sounds ridiculous.

Sorry to hear that, but it would make a good country song. Songwriting credit might make ya feel better, write a song

Nashville says I’m only good at sea shanties in pirate voice. I’ll be waiting for that trend to come back around.

The truck obsession is the #3 worst thing with modern country music. #1 & 2 are, of course, the acceptance of insurrection and hard-r racism.

Hell, I’m just going to leave with Merle Haggard’s assessment of modern country: “They’re talking about screwing on a pickup tailgate”

Or if you want a more damning indictment, go look up what Steve Earle has to say

“…the postman drops the latest issue of Taillights Monthly into the box.”

No need to mention that it came in a plain brown wrapper, obscuring the obscene cover art.

Honestly, the Chrysler/Mitsubishi partnership from the 1970s-2000s was a seriously beneficial relationship for both sides, and I don’t think either company has been anywhere near as good since it ended.

My family ended up owning 3 different Chrysler Conquests (Mitsubishi Starions) over the years. Chrysler/Dodge will never make import a cooler car than that one again, mostly because today’s Mitsubishi is a shadow of its former self.

The Starion was one of those vehicles that I fell in love with when they were brand-new back in the day. Unfortunately, a ’94 Probe GT, a Passat GLX VR6 and other cars won out…

We are doing are part in helping Mitsubishi become great again by buying 3 more new ’24 model Mitsu’s over the last year and a half or so… if only a few thousand families would also do so they would certainly be in even better shape…

New vehicles are indeed coming!

(note: I am in no way employed or affiliated with Mitsubishi Motors, just an owner of three of them).

I’ve owned 2 Conquests and then 2 DSMs over the years, I’ve paid my Mitztax. I do miss them, the Conquests were the prettiest cars I’ve owned and the DSMs were the fastest, but now they live in my memories.

Im a lifelong country fan, and even I get pretty tired of the truck themes, especially now that they’re singing about diesels and blowing smoke. Like I believe we’ve completely exhausted all the ways to jam “Chevy, Duramax, Square, F-150, etc into a rhyme.

Thinking back to the Mazda AI concept, I’m reminded of seeing a comment once about a country song where the guy’s truck leaves him.

As Jerry Reed would sing, “Lord Mr. Ford, what have you done!”

Ditch radio ‘country’ and go find some good alternative or red dirt country.

Turnpike Troubadours, Colter Wall, Silverado (Formerly Mike and the Moonpies), and Charlie Crockett are all ready with some *real* great country music for you.

Yeah, pretty sure what’s on the radio now is basically just autotuned pop music sung with a fake southern accent

Well to be fair, “Radio” country has been changing with the times for as long as the radio has existed. Look at the difference between just 90’s country and 2000s country. It’s been on a slide towards pop for a long time now, and it doesn’t show signs of stopping, because the big concert crowds will always be the younger audiences.

Lately, I’ve been on a bluegrass kick and I swear it’s healing my soul.

Oh, yeah, I like both kinds of music, personally, bluegrass and Old Time

Just noticed that The Kody Norris Show are playing at the Carter Fold this weekend, too. That place is always especially nice in the fall

I’ll just point out that the only reason that “country” music is associated with cowboys at all is because early singers dressed up like movie cowboys to piggyback off of the popularity of Westerns and shed the “hillbilly music” moniker

Early country music, like ’30s, ’40s, into the ’50s, it used to be assumed that they would perform in tailored suits, that was the original stereotype image

Exactly. I mean, Morgan Wallen is from up the road from me Sneedville, TN and his singing sounds fake as hell.

Oh I’m already there. I drive 7 hours a day, I was burned out on radio country exactly 1 week into this job and started discovering that there is still REAL country being made.but solid advice! Also don’t miss a chance to see Charles Wesley Godwin live. Dude puts on a hell of a good show.

I’ll just stick my recommendation for Jamey Johnson in here. I’d never heard of him before I saw him open for Skynyrd in 2019. Skynyrd sucked, but Jamey Johnson’s set blew the top of my head off.

Of course, my favorite country song is this one:

Truck, jeans, beer, girl, creek, boots, truck
Tan legs, train, dog, beer, Dixie cup
Gotta beer in my beer and a Chevy in my truck
Gotta dog at the wheel, cut-off jeans, truck
Dirt road, backroad, beer, moonlight
Red, white, and blue, girl, Friday night

Now let’s see if anyone else knows this song.

I especially like how this lyrical genius rhymed “truck” with “truck”.
