I recently saw a great movie about Hipgnosis, an art design group that made some of the most iconic album covers of all time. What struck me as the most poignant statement in the documentary was from honest-to-a-fault Noel Gallagher of Oasis, who said that “album covers are like the poor man’s art collection”.
He’s right, and it’s a shame that we no longer typically purchase music in vinyl or even CD form with a carefully crafted cover featuring imagery that’s as memorable as the music itself and inextricably linked to it. The ones many of us Autopians remember have cars on these covers. Which ones do you love, or not love?
The Black Keys famously had an album called El Camino, which did NOT have a Chevy ute on the cover.

According to the band’s drummer (and brother of the art director):
I told my brother the idea and my brother was like, “You know, if you name the record El Camino, everybody’s going to think of the car the El Camino.” And I was like, “Yeah exactly. That’s the f**king point!” And he was like, “OK, but why don’t we just put a car on the cover that’s not an El Camino?” And I said, “OK, what kind of car?” He says, “Just put the first car you guys ever toured in on the cover.”
Hence the Dodge Grand Caravan, even though the band’s was blue. Hailing from Akron, Ohio, the band also thought that a “busted up car in a busted-up parking lot” symbolized the struggling city.
The cover of one album by seventies AM radio dentist-office-waiting-room schmalz duo The Carpenters in 1973 was not supposed to be car-related, according to Richard Carpenter:
So they show up at my parents place and they wanted us to stand in front of the front door and to take a picture of us. I said “you mean like a snapshot my mother would take?” That’s exactly what it was and I couldn’t believe it. I said I won’t stand for it, so to speak, “what else could we do, we need to have it done.
The compromise ended up being the two driving up and down the street in Richard’s then-nearly-new Ferrari 365GTB/4 Daytona.

What a weird shot for a tri-fold album cover; just some generic LA suburb and not even a complete car visible.

You can barely see their faces, which might be just as well according to Carpenter:
If you look at my face on that picture I am pissed off! And they said just drive it down the street and we will take a picture – and it’s dreadful!
Portugal. The Man’s album Woodstock features an early Rolls Silver Shadow engulfed in flames; a great metaphor for a bonfire of vanities but to most of us Autopians it’s just yet another old British car on fire (taken by photographer and friend-of-the-band Josh Welch when he spotted it while driving from LA to Anaheim).

Also, can you please tell me why they posed Marky Mark on a Saab 900? That’s like Vanilla Ice on a Peugeot.

It’s no Kendrick Lamar GNX, that’s for sure.
So how about you? What are your favorite album covers with cars or that are otherwise car-related? Go ahead and do a web search if needed – you’ll remember some and discover more. It’s not like you want to work on a Monday morning. If you’d like, give as an image link, too!

Fu Manchu: King of the Road and it’s old Econoline.
Fu Manchu has several good ones including California Crossing (El Camino), In Search Of…(Chevelle and Mustang), and Daredevil (Meyer’s Manx Dune Buggy)
Not “car” but still internal combustion, land based, wheeled transport: Meatloaf, Bat out of Hell. Totally Heavy Metal (magazine) vibe cover art.

The one that immediately came to mind is the cover of Late for the Sky from Jackson Browne. In the song The Late Show, he sings the lyrics “and I’m sitting in a car across the way, it’s an early model Chevrolet”. And the car on the almbum cover is indeed an early model Chevy, it’s a 1954 210.

Few come to mind off the top of my head, now I’m inspired for what records to put on while at work today:
The Beach Boys “Surfin Safari”
The Cars – “Heartbeat City” with a Duster sporting big 340 Wedge decal on the front and cutaway front suspension on the back.
Def Leppard “On Through the Night”- Semi hauling an enormous guitar through space.
C.W. McCall – there’s a few I’m going
“Black Bear Road” ’cause two Jeeps Renegades. Not a Jeep guy, but those are what I think of when I think Jeep.
Jan and Dean “Drag City” photo blur of 60’s dragster on the front some cool stylized Grand Prix and Drag Cars on the back
ZZ Top “Eliminator” I remember buying that album the week it came out, somehow managed to keep it in pretty good nick all these years. Loved that video for “Legs” too.
Honorable mention for Jeff Beck “Guitar Shop” there’s just a pickup in the background with a giant guitar on it (a la Def Leppard) he’s got another on a lift working under it like a car. He was way into Amercan hot rods including a replica of John Milner’s ’32 Ford from American Grafitti, so have to give him a shout out, R.I.P.
“Doggone-it, Roy Gene! How many times do I have to ‘splain it to you? When I tell you to put a rock under the wheel, I mean a ROCK! Now look at that, what you have there is no bigger’n a grapefruit.”
“Take a rabbit’s foot and leave a pint of blood for a dee-posit!”
Always wanted one of them U-Drive-Em Army Jeep cars.
Good call on Jeff Beck’s Guitar Shop. Clever concept, well executed. And a brilliant record by a one-of-a-kind musician. RIP.
I still can’t stop thinking about Miss Christina, and her 944…
Welp, welcome to the boomtown.
Dropping one of the deepest of deep cuts from my adolescence? You, sir, are welcome on my lawn anytime.
Beach Boys, of course. Surfin’ Safari had a Ford Model A pickup, Little Deuce Coupe with the ’32 Ford 5-window, Shut Down Volume 2 with a Pontiac Grand Prix and Chevy Corvette.
Pump by Aerosmith had a pair of IH trucks.
Twang by George Strait has him sitting behind the wheel of a Cadillac.
Big Sugar: Hit and Run.

That’s some good CanCon right there. Their Turn the Lights On single also featured Gordie Johnson’s ’70 Charger. I think he also owned a ’66 at one point, too. I think it was his Charger’s exhaust you heard at the start of Red Rover, too.
He’s a known hemi afficianado.
Awesome photo
The Minutemen – Double Nickles on the Dime: interior shot of Mike Watt’s Beetle doing 55 on I-10. Slint – Tweez: Saab 99s are pretty
Edit: links.
Dang, I was just listening to the Minutemen this weekend. Mad I didn’t think of Double Nickle!
For an obscure choice of a so so album
Archers of Loaf – Vee Vee
1964 Plymouth Valiant
Technically has 2 covers, the photograph version and the illustrated version
Maybe ’64 Valiants were popular at the time, one shows up on Pot Valiant’s S/T record.
Why is my previous comment here awaiting approval?
I would guess Sc*nthorpe problem. I accidentally spelled “snicker” with a g once and my comment was blocked for days.
BTW, the little disclaimer that pops up on held comments- awaiting for approval – should be either ‘waiting for approval’ or ‘awaiting approval.’ As it stands, it reads like AI kluge.
I think the team handling the site’s tech is from Europe, and English may not be their first language.
Makes sense.
Thought of another one: Fush Yu Mang by Smash Mouth, with an old Fairlane (I think) wagon flying through space.
You triggered a memory and a search for “worst” but alas, the album cover for the soundtrack (yes, one was sold!) of the Dice Clay’s Adventures of Ford Fairlane did not feature the car. Else it would’ve taken that one walking away.
No link of any kind because FTG.
Jeez, no Husker Du peeps here?
Zen Arcade is one of the greatest album covers, period, with a seemingly infinite number of cars depicted.
https://www.askthepilot.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Zen-Arcade-cover.jpg
Hot Tuna – Burgers. A very nice old <someone identify the car?> on a beach, positioned with the car and the seashore skillfully aligned, the golden hour sun touching the front details of the car and the band members’ faces. Design and photography credit Bruce Steinberg.
1936 Cadillac, Series 60, maybe? That’s definitely a Caddy “Flying Goddess” hood ornament from around then
Three Dog Night Golden Biscuits – I think it’s a Fiberfab Valkyrie (read that it was one, but cannot find the reference). Lusted after that car in me yout.
How about an honorable mention for Judas Priest’s Turbo?
The motorbike on Painkiller is pretty sweet, too.
Hall and Oates Pontiac Fiero promotional album – available at your local Pontiac dealer!

Come Along and Come Along II by Tatsuro Yamashita. They were both compilation albums with gorgeous artwork by Eizin Suzuki showing an old Greyhound bus and a 2nd gen Thunderbird. The music itself is excellent too, and the compilation albums had a fantastically goofy fake radio DJ voiceover between tracks

The Scorpions “Lovedrive”. Not sure what car they are inside of but who cares because while it may not be their best album it’s still great. They have been around forever and still put a smile on my face every time I listen to them. Another favorite is ZZ Top “Eliminator”. Great album and great music videos.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eliminator_%28album%29#/media/File:ZZ_Top_-_Eliminator.jpg
I always liked Jackson Browne’s ‘Late for the Sky’ album cover featuring his (allegedly) 1954 Chevy Bel Air supposedly gifted to him by Glenn Frye. The cover was inspired by surrealist René Magritte painting ‘L’Empire Des Lumiéres.’
The laziest and worst car album cover (in my collection) is The Beach Boys’ ‘Little Deuce Coupe.’ It was a 1961 Hot Rod magazine cover shot of hot rod enthusiast Clarence “Chili” Catallo’s custom ‘32 Ford three window coupe. So, yes, the Silver Sapphire Barris Kustom Shop creation is a deuce coupe, but the photo was nothing specially done for the album and Capitol Records even cropped Catallo’s head and shoulders out of the Eric Rickman photo to fit it into the 1963 cover design. Lame.
The soundtrack to Vanishing Point. Some really great music on this. I managed to snag this album like 30 years ago in a used record shop. The clerk was bummed because he had been saving up to buy it ($12).

Also, yes, it is noted that the Challenger in the movie is a 1970, and on the album cover is a ’71.
It’s really Chevy’s fault for calling a car “The Road/Way/Path” isn’t it?
Jackson Browne – Laywers In Love is the first one that comes to mind. I don’t think a W123 coupe can actually float, though.
Edit – Ooh! And What’s Next by Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush, featuring a pro-street Dodge Omni 024!
Why Did ’80s Rockers love Mercedes So Much?: Cold Start – The Autopian
there’s a link to a video of how they made it!
The Osmonds – “Crazy Horses”
OK, how about some obscure ones? “Dust Lane” by Yann Tiersen – a ‘60’s Alfa Giulia. “Privateering” by Mark Knopfler – another one in the “derelict van symbolizing something” genre. “Hits”, a compilation by Joni MItchell has a Datsun 1200 coupe. “I Flathead” by Ry Cooder has what I think is a belly tank racer.
I think there are more “open roads” on the cover of albums than cars!
First I thought of has a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it’s got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks. It’s a model made before catalytic converters so it’ll run good on regular gas. It’s 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it’s dark, and we’re wearing sunglasses

fix the cigarette lighter.
