The car business is ruthless, and no amount of love for a brand matters if it can’t justify its existence. We’ve lost so many legends over the years, from Studebaker and Packard to AMC and Pontiac. But let’s say that you’ve met a genie, and he’s willing to grant you the wish of bringing any automaker you want back to life. But the catch is that you have to kill an existing automaker, any automaker, to make it happen. What carmaker would you destroy to reincarnate another?
To make this question a bit harder, I’m already disqualifying one answer for being too easy. I expect a ton of people to say that they would end Buick to save Pontiac. While normally a valid answer, I want to see my fellow Autopians get really creative here. What’s a brand that isn’t Buick that you’d cease to bring Pontiac back, for example?
I’m just young enough that most of the brands I remember dying are many of the once-great domestic brands that withered throughout the 2000s before being sent to live on a farm upstate. I’ve seen the loss of greats like Saab, Saturn, Oldsmobile, Mercury, Coda, Corbin, Fisker (twice), Plymouth, Local Motors, Lordstown, and others. I’ve also seen some brands fail to launch or sell many copies, like Elio and Lordstown. We technically even lost Checker Motors in the 2000s.

If I were to save a brand, I’d bring back Saturn, but specifically the version from the 1990s. Saturn was such a fresh take from General Motors. Its cars were cheap to buy, frugal to run, stylish, and shockingly durable. Saturn dealers didn’t force you to haggle, and the brand tried its best to treat customers like family, not just walking sacks of money.
As a kid and then later a teenager, I always saw the Saturns from the 1990s as looking like plastic spaceships. I adored the goofy huge steering wheels, the simple instrumentation, and beige interiors. As an adult, I still find myself appreciating a ’90s Saturn that’s still kicking.

That’s not to say that the 2000s Saturns were bad. One of my bucket list cars is a second-generation Vue in that neat color-shifting bluish paint. Of course, I also own a yellow Saturn Sky Red Line, one of my all-time dream cars. But I think Saturn’s greatest hits were a bit earlier.
The hard question would be what brand I’d zap out of existence to bring Saturn back. If you forced me to eliminate a current General Motors brand, I think I would choose GMC. Now, I know this is a hot take, especially since the combined truck sales of Chevrolet and GMC make General Motors the biggest pickup truck provider in America. However, does GMC actually need to be an entirely separate brand to achieve this?

Ford has proven that you can sell standard pickup trucks and luxury pickup trucks under one brand name. Likewise, GMC itself has shown that you can shove brand names into other brand names, like Hummer, and people won’t seem to care that much. I bet if it absolutely needed to, General Motors could figure out how to get Chevrolet and GMC to co-exist. Had GMC still been the home of GM’s heavy trucks and buses, I’d feel differently, but those times are now behind us.
If I could open the floor to destroy any brand to save Saturn, I would have to pour one out for Faraday Future. Honestly, it’s hard to fathom just what Faraday Future is even up to. The brand’s sole production car has possibly the worst trim names in the business: FF 91 2.0 Futurist Alliance, FF 91 2.0 Futurist, and FF 91 2.0, and the company seems far more interested in making AI robots than cars, anyway.

Let us also not forget that absolutely insane press event Faraday Future had with the AI van with a digital face.
Of course, this is all just for fun. I harbor no ill feelings toward any car brand or any of the fine people who work for them. But if given this opportunity by this overly-specific genie- sorry, Faraday Future. Here’s where I turn things over to you. If you could save one brand at the expense of another, which brands would they be? Again, you can’t save Pontiac by killing Buick.
Our secret designer, The Bishop, says that he would kill Infiniti to bring back Datsun.

Kill Luxgen and bring back Stutz.
But only in burgundy.
Kill Volvo as they don’t even make a wagon anymore and bring back Saab. Net Zero on Swedish manufacturers.
I would be fine with killing off Fiat for good and then bring back AMC.
I’d gladly kill off Tesla to bring back Geo or Saturn
While we’re at it, I’d probably kill off Fiat and bring back Yugo. Not like Fiat’s dominating the sales charts anyways.
But only if all the Yugos are copies of Fiats.
Since Geo’s were all rebranded Japanese cars whose manufacturers are still doing well-ish, did they ever really die?
Bring back ISO and kill Chrysler.
There are brands I would kill just for the sake of killing them.
Maybach: What is a Maybach anyhow? A Mercedes for people who think that Mercedeses aren’t fancy enough. Sheesh.
Dodge or Chrysler. Keep one, kill the other. I don’t care which. Chrysler makes a sedan and a minivan. That’s not enough to justify a whole nameplate. Consolidate.
Tesla: Obvious.
Chrysler makes a minivan – and a minivan. Dead man walking. Dodge is little better.
Kill Audi and bring back Pontiac. But I want the Good Pontiac.
Pre-Corporate engines and axles?
Saturn, specifically for a dust buster van redux. GM, put that BEV3 platform to work and make a EV van with some actual range. The Vistiq can get 300 miles and it’s a big SUV. Could you manage like 330 or more with a futuristic van shape? Saturn as a whole should be GM’s economy EV company. It would also help eliminate some of the overlap in Chevy’s SUVs.
We can get rid of Subaru. I don’t really care what we bring back but it’ll be a plenty fair trade regardless.
Chrysler is already dead man walking so – Oldsmobile
Kill Ram and make it the Dodge it always was.
Kill any random VAG brand. Bring back Borgward.
Kill RAM
Bring back Holden
I own a Pontiac, but I’m not sure it could or should be brought back today, given the Native American namesake
However, Oldsmobile had a strong performance legacy of its own, actually starting when Pontiac was still selling sedate cars for traveling salesmen, with the Rocket V8s, and later, turbocharging, the 442, Hurst/Olds, even in the 80s, they had the Touring Sedan and Quad 4, there’s a long legacy of performance and technical innovation there.
Alternatively, Packard as an American rival to Rolls-Royce and Bentley, as long as it was done right, with really high build quality and top notch materials, and no extreme retro styling, its been dead too long for that to really work
Kill Jeep and bring back International Harvester
Coming back as a VAG product, guess we shall see how the BEV thing gets on with it.
Nah, I’m talking about the original “born rusty” ones.
Fuck Saab, marry Genesis, kill Tesla.
Wait, that’s not the game we’re playing?
Ohhh, look at yoo over dere, yoo little cutie pie-ah!
Kill: Tesla, I freakin’ hate those things 🙁
Bring back: Hmm.. Gordon Keeble. For JT 🙂
This is tough… there are so many brands I want to revive, but they didn’t quite die yet like 90’s Mitsubishi and Nissan, Volvo wagons especially when they came with a Polestar badge…
I’m going to settle for let’s revive Scion because they made actually good cars, cheaply, that had character and to sacrifice I’ll choose … … dammit, why is VW the only one I actively hate … RAM. Sell them as GD Dodge RAMS!
Kill DS to revive Lancia
Kill Polestar to bring back Facel Vega
Kill RAM to make it into a proud Dodge again
Kill Infiniti to make it into a proud Nissan
Vauxhall is Opel. My apologies to the badge manufacturers for the missed business but this farce has to stop.
Kill Acura to make it into a proud, good looking Honda as it’s supposed to be anywhere else in the world.
Bring back Amati in Acura’s slot.
MANDATE Lexus to provide coachbuilder-friendly chassis & powertrain kits (again, by law – no less than 8 cylinders), to provide to anyone able to build on them with a minimum run of say 500 units. Put Hispano Suissa, Berliet, Isotta Fraschini, Duesenberg, Packard tags in a bag, let them pick blind.
PROHIBIT Italians from manufacturing anything even remotely having to deal with electrics or fuel delivery.
Arguably Lexus was the ONLY upmarket Japanese brand able to overshadow it’s base brand long term.
Kill RAM, bring back AMC
I immediately thought kill GMC bring back Saturn.
Kill Audi to save Packard
Kill Cadillac to save Studebaker
Kill Fiat to save AMC
But without GMC, Buick dealers will die, oh – wait.
Saturn Buick or Buick Saturn dealer just doesn’t roll off the tongue like Buick GMC dealer I suppose.
Anyone can make AMC now.
Add a dash of GM ignition, Chrysler engines, Ford dashboards, and a garage-built jeep-type-product assembled by someone who’s got only half an idea of what the end product might be.
The last AMC l looked at buying had Ford ignition and carb, GM P/S, A/C and brake booster, Chrysler Torqueflight trans. GM column.
Can I kill current Nissan to bring back old Nissan? Because if so, that’s my answer
Reincarnation.
That’s my answer too. Kill Nissan, replace with Nissan from 30-35 years ago.
I’d kill VW even if I didn’t get to bring anything back.
Can we kill VW and resurrect VW to when it was good (and less reliable)?
You can, I’ll still be piling dirt on the corpse.
Does this have to be a remotely fair trade?
Kill: Buick
Bring back: Duesenberg
Goodbye Buick, hello Pontiac.
Came here to say this.
[redacted]
I read it, but felt compelled to comment anyway 😀
Kill: Stellantis
Bring back: Mitsubishi from the 90s/00s.
