When You Can Use A Calendar To Measure 60 MPH Acceleration: COTD

Escortdiesel

The cars of today are all hot rods. Everything from family minivans to budget electric sedans can gallop to 60 mph faster than some classic sports cars did. If you think some car sold today is slow, you should look at how slow diesel cars used to be!

Mark wrote a showdown between a 1984 Ford Escort Diesel and a 1987 Ford Tempo AWD. Josh O:

Vidframe Min Top
Vidframe Min Bottom

The Escort has been trying to reach 60mph since 1984.

“Redneck” Mark:

These are a couple of hateful choices. Did you go outside and kick a puppy when you were finished writing this?

4jim:

I have owned an 80s escort in the 80s. NO NO NO Never again.

Alpscarver:

I was under the impression that an Escort would be a short-term rental.

Grey alien in a beige sedan came in with the unhinged answer:

I want the Escort. I want to row my own gears to wring out every single one of those 54 horses on tap.

I want to experience the rapture from highway merging with a car too underpowered to get out of its own way.

I want to roll coal on F-150 gassers. There, I said it.

No other vehicle offers such a complete package as this one.

Argentine Utop:

You made people vote for an automatic Tempo over a stick Escort. Impressive job, Mark!

Boreham Motorworks

Speaking of Ford Escorts, Matt gets an honorary COTD nomination for a line in his post about Ford Escort Mk1 RS and RS200 recreations. Tbird points out the line:

“My weakness for Escorts is so well documented that the only careers I’m really qualified for at this point are auto journalist or US Congressman.”

LOL.

I wrote about my new addiction to model trains. Rod Millington:

The best way to think of this is to truly enjoy it as a hobby your wife and you share and can do together. It’s like a date night, but instead of spending $60-100 on food/drinks, you can spend it on trains!

Peter wrote about how someone is endurance racing diecast cars using a belt sander that has been running non-stop for about a month. Goblin:

I think the main takeway from this is that a Harbor Freight belt sander can last 29 days of uninterrupted work and more.

[Ed note: I just grabbed the Harbor Freight pic as an example, I don’t know what brand of sander Diecast Endurance is using – Pete]

Ford

Finally, Jason wrote about yet another bizarre brochure. I Pete in the woods:

Given the era, I have to respect the inclusive nature of featuring a female serial killer. A still-bloody head and shoulders is not subtle and the hat box has me asking: What’s in the box?! What’s in the fucking box?!

Have a great evening, everyone!
