Hey y’all! The folks at Avants are hosting a wagon-themed event at the Petersen Museum in Los Angeles next Sunday, May 3rd, and they really want some strange stuff there. Knowing how strange we are, they asked if we could help provide some strangeness for Wagonfest this year. Even better, we have some free passes for people who have a wagon to bring.
If you’re in the SoCal area, or can get to the SoCal area, and have a wagon, shoot me an email at matt@theautopian.com and I can share the secret code to get you in for free. If you want to buy a wagon (check out this sweet Pug) and can prove to me that you bought it for this event, I’ll either spot you a free year of membership at your current level or give you a free membership.
And if you don’t have a wagon and just want to go see the event, here are the details:
Wagon lovers unite! We’re back for another awesome WagonFest SoCal on Sunday, May 3rd at Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles.
The largest gathering of station wagons in the universe! Tourings, Estates, Avants, Longroofs, Sport Turismos and more. Don’t miss your chance to see all of these epic grocery-getters gathered in one spot. Is this wagon heaven? Yes…yes it is!
It’s free to come check it out if you want to go and David will bring some merch.

Also, buy this sweet RWD manual wagon.

I went to Wagonfest last weekend, in my silver ’89 Volvo 240 wagon (aka 245). Here’s a photo of it parked between a couple of other Autopians, up on the roof of the Petersen garage:

Roughly a third of the maybe 150ish participating wagons were late-model German ones. Which is not surprising, given that actual recent wagons from American, Japanese, and Korean brands are mostly non-existant.
That’s fine and all, but after the first few dozen, all those low-slung, pricey, black Audi and Mercedes wagons sort of start to look the same.
There were a few genuinely charming early Japanese wagonettes, and one early 3-series BMW wagon that I’d love to own, and a big, bubbly, GM one (from the very early ’90s maybe?) with cool motorized vent windows all the way in the back by the C-pillar (from another Autopian). There was also one W123 Mercedes diesel wagon driven by a mom from central casting and her kids, and a few handsome W124 wagons too, which seem a bit petite when parked next to newer German wagons. BTW, lots of different wagons had folding rear-facing third-row seats (including mine).
Sadly there wasn’t a single Citroen DS wagon (you can always count on at least two or three of them at the Best of France & Italy car show at Woodley Park). Mine was the only old Volvo wagon of any kind, which surprised me, since 140/240 wagons were so popular back in the day. There was one low rider wagon with hydraulics, tons of chrome, and great paint. And I think there were 3-4 Saab wagons too, which are always great to see, and there were two Toyota Crown wagons, which were very nice (as you’d expect them to be). There was but a single Dodge Magnum, which (again) surprised me, given how many of those were on the street a couple decades ago. There were a few almost-wagons too: tall-roof/wagony Japanese hatchbacks, etc… and an Omni/Shelby GLH too, which is definitely a hatchback, but so what? 😉
Overall, it was a fine way to spend a cloudy Sunday morning in LA, even though I hate to leave the house so early. There was complimentary coffee and bagels, provided (I think) by Cars & Bids (apologies if it was someone else).
And thanks Autopian for the ticket! The Petersen Museum wanted $50 to bring a car (and the parking machine thing tried to charge another $21 to exit), so the free ticket was appreciated… I’d never have been able to rationalize attending otherwise.
I’d like to attend a Swedish car fest, since older Volvos and Saabs are so interesting (to me). There must be one around SoCal somewhere.
Sad that the WagonFest in Mesa, AZ last month didn’t get a plug
French cars are cool
This sounds like a cool event, love wagons! I have a Ford Transit Connect LWB Wagon, it looks like a mini-minivan but Ford calls it a Passenger Wagon. It’s on the East Coast though.
Not weird, but just for the record the two wagons that I’ve owned were 02 Mazda Protege5 and 05 Saab 9-2x Linear. Trading the Mazda for the Saabaru was a bad decision that set off a chain. I’d have been better off keeping that noisy and somewhat slow but fun little guy.
Not that I can join as I am living om Europe. But would a BMW 02 touring count as weird Wagon?
Will there be wheelbarrows of shrimp?
Asking for a friend.
I’m not as thrilled by the Petersen and their events as some folks are, due mostly to their admission prices which usually strike me as excessive, but it’s only about 20 minutes from my house. I do have a wagon, but surely there will be other Volvo 240s there, right? Anyway, I’m only reading this now on Sunday morning, and the event started an hour ago, so it’s moot.
next week
Ah, thanks. 🙂 Why do you hate Bob Barker? Just curious.
Because I’ve used this name since the first Happy Gilmore movie.
I understand. 🙂
If I could back in time and IF it hadn’t rusted out within two years, I would bring my dad’s blue two door Vega Kammback wagon (shooting brake?). Though they were hot garbage, I always loved the look of these…
Darn, I already signed up for a track day (with my wagon, of course) for that day. Otherwise, I would bring my wagon there!
Would love to show off my 2020 Tourx, but no way I’m putting 5200 miles and 80 hours of round trip driving. Would depreciate the car by $10000 and make me want to never drive again.
You’re in the wrong site lol.
SoCal and strange? Hmmm. Your already sending David. Go Autopian!
I have a 2024 Chevrolet Trax LS without the roof rails.
To me, that qualifies it to be a wagon. The EPA also called it a wagon in 2023 when it was built.

I would say that counts as my Kia Soul is also listed as a station wagon.
The title and registration list my 2006 xB as a Station Wagon. I even posted a picture on Reddit for all the disbelievers.
I’ll be there with a Buick TourX, kinda rare but not that weird. And tragically, I already bought a ticket.
I could bring my ’02 325iT (RWD, stick) in Topaz blue with the Rallye Fun Pack (ok, sport package in BMW-speak)…..but NJ is not close to LA.
We need something like this on the east coast, STAT!
Everybody can meet at my place in Maine. I will be there once it thaws out, usually 4th of July or so. I’d love to see your car and compare BMW wagons, LOL.
Yep, wrong side of the country for me too. If I had the time, I could get my TSX wagon over there… but I don’t think my Type 3 Squareback would make it 😛
Yes! Preferably as close to the Florida Panhandle as possible, so that I can make it – and preferably after I finally score a sweet wagon to drive to it…
Los Angeles just became a tempting destination
Long roofs and tacos? Hell yeah!
I hope somebody shows up with a Dodge Magnum.
If you brought a Jeep, would that be wagoneering? 😛
Not mine, but I just spotted this about ten minutes ago. Honda cvcc wagon.

Roadtripping my FF see you soon
I have a stock Prius V, does that count? It’s kind of weird these days
I had one of those, in fact the very last ’92 Peugeot SW8 imported into the US, and the ONLY manual transmission one. Mine was rather nicer though – here parked at the French Embassy in DC for a Peugeot Club gathering circa the turn of the century:

I’d take my also very rare 6spd RWD e91 BMW, but LA is a LONG drive from Maine.

Sweet ride, couldn’t ask for a better way to Cannonball it.
No time and even less ambition for a 7000mi <eek> round trip.
To paraphrase the late great southern humorist Jerry Clower, you don’t leave Maine and just drop by Los Angeles.
No doubt about that! Florida to Maine and back is bad enough, and that is about the same round-trip as to LA one-way.
Well, in that case, can you swing through Florida and pick me up on your way out there? LOL
Both of those cars are so lovely… I’ve always loved that gen of Peugeots. Something about the dips in the hood to meet the headlights has always resonated with me.
I had three 505s all-together Turbodiesel automatic sedan and wagon, and then this stick gas wagon. Lovely cars. Though my first love are 504s – I had diesel stick sedan and wagon, and an automatic wagon.
I sure wish I still had this one – had to sell it when I lost my job 20-odd years ago:

The sad part is I just missed an opportunity to buy it back. The guy I sold it to was a collector, and when he died his collection was auctioned off. I found about about that about week after the auction happened. I absolutely would have flown to Indiana and bought it back.
Seattle member here. Avants is awesome, the magazine is kick ass, and Adam is a super great dude.
