Vokaro please
I think I saw that Peugeot posted to the Facebook Peugeot Owner’s Club. Lovely cars, 505s. I’ve owned three of them.
Since I am absolutely not in a position to spend a dime on cars right now due to my new house having turned into the movie The Money Pit, of course I have been looking for Alfa Spiders on Facebook Marketplace. And there are a half dozen nice looking ones for sale within a couple hour drive of me. Guaranteed when the time comes that I can do it, there won’t be any. I have decided the time has come after 30 years to part with my Spitfire and replace it with something more suitable to have as a classic in Florida rather than bringing it down here. The Spider perfectly fits the bill. Much happier on Interstates, and most of them have air-conditioning. And I know them well having owned an ’86 Veloce.
Given it’s size, price and all steel construction, the Cortez has to be close to scrap value.
I wonder if Matt could line up another transport partnership for the Mirai and ship it off to David, and what Elise’s thoughts toward her image and a black sedan are. If the haul is sponsored you’d likely be close to breakeven just handing it in to the auction Galpin uses.
If this was a shitbox showdown I’d vote for the Peugeot under the pretense of getting rid of the ugly front and rear ends and reverting back to EU specs. Since parts can be had for cheap in Argentina, it would be interesting to see how it works reversing the normal parts traffic from North to South, to the opposite.
Huh, I didn’t realize Argentina was a repository for cheap Pug parts!
They were built here between +- 1981 and 1995, so plenty of things can be sourced here. Same for 403s, 404s, 504s (built between 1969 to 1999), 405s and so on.
This is a build series I’d be interested in.
Great Peugeot, it dates me that I knew somebody who dailyed one. Where is it?
I’ve owned three 505s and three 504s. LOVE them, would have another that is a minter.
NC, if you click the amounts on any specific car you can see the listing.
Maybe Bob’s German car repair would take a non running VW thing and a 63 MB 220SE in trade?
BOD is about 20 miles away.
Do it!!!
Perhaps you should!
Brilliant, always felt this could be a great way of getting new stories. But the selection is not crazy enough, hope there are more interesting vehicles coming. Some road trips make the best stories, so could be modding a SUV and taking her to Moab, together with a DT jeep.
Re. the Peugeot, you left out a couple of words.
> We already have a French car and this doesn’t need much
… Yet
> so it’s not much of a project.
… Yet.
The Suzuki and Wagovan are 100% the ones to get.
How about another Pao?

“Counterpoint: It’s being sold by “Bob’s German Auto Repair” so… maybe there’s a story there.”
Maybe but really, how bad can it be? And if its THAT bad there’s a lot of floor under that $7500 ask.
Can there be an option to get Lyft-style rides in one of these @ Pebble to further contribute to the tip jar?
I’m still on team SHOstar
Same.
X90 because it sounds like a title of an Ed Wood movie.
Civic Wagovan Si Dakar Edition
Wagovan Wagovan Wagovan!!!! I love the Wagovan, you love the Wagovan, EVERYONE loves the Wagovan.
It rolls on spares,
Alone or in pairs,
Wag-o-van!
It’s good for a snack,
You fit in the back,
Wag-o-van!
Wa-go, va-an
It’s not heavy or wood!
Wa-go, va-an
Unlike the Mirai, it’s good!
You forgot and makes a wheezing sound
Seems like the Mirai project would have to be “creating a safe and functional hydrogen source and fueling system.” So yeah, perhaps not.
I mean, you can get hydrogen by splitting water with electrolysis, or as a byproduct when using sulfuric acid when anodizing!
Oh. “Safe.” Right.
It burns clean
Jason/batteries/chainsaw
Maybe if one of there writers has a bunch of space for solar power. Jason might but everyone else seems to live in cramped locations.
As much as I love to see other people spending money on ridiculous vehicles, The Autopian is a business, and should make these sorts of decisions on what would generate clicks.
The Landy should go to an enthusiast or marque specialist who has the knowledge and resources to do a proper restoration. PASS
Aerostar is a maybe. If the seller is cooperative. Where do you even find a used SHO powertrain these days? The Aerostar was also offered with a Lima engine, so maybe a hotted-up T-Bird turbo setup would generate clicks. MAYBE.
The number of Americans who remember Peugeot is probably tiny, and this one isn’t really a project. PASS.
Cortez is the best RV ever made by a forklift company. Buying it nets you two projects, mechanical and living quarters. Absolutely clickworthy. BUY
X-90. Every one that’s still in service has been modded to death already. Nothing new to see here. PASS
Mirai is worth zero as it sits. If you want a Mirai project, I’m sure they can be had cheaper. Forget the hydrogen, do a body swap onto a RWD unibody with a 2JZ swap. MAYBE
Vokaro is another car that probably ought to go to a specialist/collector. PASS
The Civic looks like it’s too good of a daily driver to turn it into a project. I’m not sure how the AWD drivetrain would hold up to a more powerful engine. MAYBE
I can’t even believe that I’m saying the best choice from this assemblage is a weird old RV, but here we are.
I get what you’re saying and appreciate the thoughtful arguments, but I doubt I’m the only reader who truly dgaf about RVs, trailers, and the like. Not even Mercedes’s always entertaining and educational writing makes me care about terrible alternatives to a hotel room.
Every boomer and their uncle talks about LS swaps like they’re actually a thing. Maybe the Wagovan should actually be LS swapped. I’d read that.
And I hear what you’re saying, and I have no idea how many clicks the RV posts generate.
The fact that I picked the Cortez wasn’t so much about how good it was, just that the other choices on the list were too mediocre or too specialized.
I love the fact that you’ve already tried to buy something from Aerostar guy. Only at The Autopian.
Regardless of the potential shenanigans please buy this Aerostar. It’s white, which is a crime. Maybe mod it and either get it wrapped (sponsor?) or have someone paint it a la Rush album Krieger van? There’s just so many possibilities!
I want to do that SHO green or SHO red!
Oh SHO green please and thank you.
SHOnuff!
I vote for the Peugeot (because it’s cool) and the X90.
Let’s hear the other van story
Let’s see if we buy this van first, then we can tell the story of both!
I feel like the language in that ad is familiar!
I literally lol’d at “This one is so rusty it even scared off Mercedes.”
But David said, “Wait a minute!”
“The body is solid. Barely any rust.”
That Aerostar looks pretty nice. RWD minivan? Yes please.
The rest seem rather overpriced, but maybe that’s my inner cheapskate talking.
Hard no on the X-90. They were stupid and ugly in the 90s and they’re still stupid and ugly today. And that’s coming from a lifelong Samurai loyalist. If you buy that turd, you better do something amazingly crazy with it.
Personally the Civic wagon is the most appealing of this bunch.
I knew what that Vokaro was when I saw the title image. And that’s the nicest Vokaro I’ve ever seen. Should have snatched that one up.
It’s got a sort of Harlequin paint job and GTI-esque plaid door panels, so someone sort of maybe respected the VW heritage/
Tesla swap with a 20 kWh pack and transmission delete. Using the 20,000 RPM carbon-banded motor from a PLAID, coupled with the most energy dense batteries available that make enough power to max that motor out in that small of a package, you’d have no weight gain over a Beetle engine, maybe even a weight reduction.
And with that harlequin paint scheme, it would be used for straight-up clowning. 300 electric horsepower in a < 1,400 lb Vokaro would be rowdy.
10/10 would clown
This sounds more like a plan for the Mirai TBH.
This is indeed the one to get. I promise to contribute
You still can. The ad is still up.
I don’t have a spare place I could even keep it. Otherwise, the temptation would have been high.
Fair.
I will note the Clark was specifically described as scaring off Mercedes and NOT Mr. Tracy.
It must not be rusty enough (or David has gone Full California and now flees from anything with even surface spotting)
It scared me off because I couldn’t find a single panel that didn’t have rust on it. Bodywork is an automatic turn-off for me, but I’d also feel guilty about letting it rust more.
Mercedes, I think you’re safe as it appears to have maxed out its rust potential.
I was going to say it was only rusty on the outside… then I saw the oven.
I got tetanus and ebola just looking at the listing photos. You made the right choice.
I bought a rusty Westphalia, spent a bundle on it – maybe two bundle$$$$ – and the rust came back in spite of cutting out and replacing metal. Rust never sleeps. Worst auto decision of my life.
And I knew better!!!!!
