I like the Peugeot and I’d be tempted. I also like the Wagovan. It always seemed a nicer version than my ’84 Tercel 4×4 wagon. But the confusion over its description is puzzling. I’m pretty meh about all the others.
Every one of these seems like a bad idea. So just choose one!
I love the Vokaro, Subaru engine swap?
A large part of many of these (Land Rover, SHOStar, RV) seem like a substantial part of the work is in the body or detailing…and that’s not really the thing that jumps to my mind first with the Autopian team.
Then again, what I love about the Autopian team first and foremost is your writing about cars, so maybe a body-oriented project will make for the best content.
Well, no one else has spoken up for it, but I’d be interested on reading David’s take on working on arguably the most widespread Jeep-clone. ie the Land Rover.
Where can we drop other suggestions? My Dad is moving and trying to unload a 64 Volvo 2 door. ????
I like the Wagovan and the Vokaro, but I’m not really sure what the project would be for either of those.
I also like the idea of a SHOstar, but I’ll admit that seems like a stretch project for the staff as of now. There’s no doubt DT can work some mechanical magic, but putting together a custom project like that without just bodging some stuff together is going to take more time and custom fabrication skill than I think DT has right now, and I don’t know that anyone else on staff has it either.
Now, this isn’t to say we members have a lot more time/skill than you, but maybe the next long-term build using the tip jar can become a member build? I’m thinking something along the lines of:
With each stage, the member/s assisting can be the feature for a members’ rides style write up where you get some background on their various projects, skills, etc. This gets you additional stories as you go and your writers can focus on the story rather than the wrenching, and you’ll pull from some great talent for the actual build. I wonder if there’s a tool brand or parts brand that would want to do a partnership with that as well.
I’m sure it would be a huge logistical undertaking and may be beyond the scope of what funding/time allows at the moment, but I think doing it that way would let you focus on the stories over the wrenching work, which is what you need to keep the lights on. I’m loving the WWII Jeep series, but I can’t help but feel there’s more to the story and would have liked to see it come out as it was happening, but DT couldn’t keep up since actually getting the stuff done took all his time away from writing.
It’s a shame the Mirai is completely unfuelable in the vast majority of the US. It’s an interesting vehicle and quite nice looking for a predator-face era Toyota.
I’d like to see the SHOstar, personally.
Also I know where a few busted up Vixen 21 motorhomes are if you want to do a cool RV.
The Peugeot is perfect. Sure, it might not need a lot right this second, but it’s a $3,000 Peugeot. It will need things. Lots of things.
