Rest Assured, We Will Never AI Slop You (On Purpose)

Autopian And Ai Ts

If your memory stretches all the way back to three days ago, you’ll recall that Brian had a story about the efficacy of banning lead in gasoline. It’s an interesting story, and if you haven’t read it yet, go ahead and click that hyperlink or just click on the image below.

Indeed, it’s the image that we’re here to discuss, as it was flagged in the comments as generative AI (or “AI junk”) – and that’s a thing we don’t do here. Except for a little, but not like you think. Don’t worry, I’ll get to it.

Vidframe Min Top
Vidframe Min Bottom

Let’s start with the image:

Spacer

Thumb Hp

CTSVmkeLS6 pounced:

I Thought You Guys

More:

Why The Ai Slop

I have to admit that the truck does have the sort of too-smooth weirdness that goes with AI-generated imagery, and the lower edge of the rearmost window curves in a way that looks wrong. Space laid down the gauntlet:

Year Make Model

The truck may indeed be AI! But if it is, it’s not for lack of effort to avoid AI images:

Kludged

Here are the two images in question, and the “Exclude Generative AI” selection that I always make sure is on. In fact, I double-checked to make sure the button wasn’t grey to indicate it was not selected, but no, that’s just how the exclude-AI button looks when switched on. See I Told You

As you can see, the smoke in the stock photo as supplied was black and diesely, which Merc correctly called out as confusion-inducing, so I “inverted” the smoke to make it white-ish:

Mixed Messages

… and I think the white smoke, if anything, makes it look even more AI – oops. And the girl is a bit uncanny, TBH. But not AI, if the filter did its job.

Shall we go deeper? GENERIC-NAME did, and I am in their debt:

Generic Sleuth

Since that JPEG of comments doesn’t click, here are hyperlinks to the “2021 scrape date” and the “few generic photos of cars” references.

[Editor’s Note: Pete does great work and makes so many great topshots. I think the real takeaway here is we should always find a fun/weird car or truck to use, unless it has to be something generic. And that’s why we can never use AI – those robots don’t know from cool cars. – JT]

So, it appears the truck must not be AI – at least not the type of AI where a prompt is entered – “a white pickup truck with billowing exhaust smoke enveloping a girl with her hair blowing in the smoke” – and et voilà, there’s Suzy Smokalot.

… but that’s not the only kind of AI, and in the interest of total transparency, let’s talk about the kind of programs we do use that could be considered AI.

One tool I use in nearly every topshot is Photoshop’s “Generative Expand” capability, which is invaluable for extending the backgrounds of images that would not otherwise fill the 1600×900 pixel “canvas” called for by the topshot template. Like this:

Screenshot 2026 02 06 At 3.43.25 pm

In this case (and nearly every case), no prompt is entered; I just click Generate, and bingo-bongo, the background is extended:

Screenshot 2026 02 06 At 3.44.34 pm

Now, you may have also noticed the basketball hoop behind the E-Class disappeared. After the background was extended, I used the “Remove Tool” to paint out the hoop – you can see it in pink:

Screenshot 2026 02 06 At 3.44.10 pm

There’s no prompt for this tool, you just paint over what you want removed, and the software attempts to figure how to fill the space. This may or may not involve AI, depending on the background.

I did say that in nearly every case, nothing is prompted. In instances where I’ve needed to use a prompt, it’s to stop the AI from generating things. For example, if it’s a pic taken on the floor of a car show, the AI will often paint in some scary body-horror facsimile of a show attendee that looks more like a transporter accident on The Enterprise. And so, the prompt will be something like “extend background, do not add figures.” The Photoshop AI also likes to put in signs with gibberish on them, so I’ll tell it to leave those out too. But again, this is infrequent.

I consider this use of AI to be innocuous, as it makes no change to the message of the image or its content in any meaningful way, and the changes could have been made “by hand” (so to speak), the way we used to do it, with the Clone Stamp and painting tools, albeit more slowly and potentially less convincingly.

It’s also worth noting that Photoshop says it only trains its AI on images it owns, rather than scraping the entirety of the internet with no concern for ownership or copyright and the like. “What about the images users load into Adobe products?” Well, that’s less black and white, but not anything Adobe doesn’t disclose, assuming you read the EULA – which pretty much no one does, but it’s in there.

So, to be completely transparent and precise, bits of grass, sky, pavement, and leaves on the outskirts of some images may indeed have been touched by something being called AI that, in previous times, might have just been called a computer program. But nothing you see (or read) at The Autopian is generated from nothing by AI, or even significantly contributed to or manipulated by AI.

We are in the business of making content by humans, for humans.

Peter, Space, and Generic Name? I’m getting a lone gunmen vibe off this. You have to figure with the billions being spent on AI the companies are going to do all they can to force it down our throats and claim look profitable despite 90% of what it does it does worse than current systems. I mean how much modern technology are we forced to use now that didn’t improve over the old methods?

Just a thought: I grew up on a farm, and have encountered various forms of organic slop, and frankly the non AI slop is pretty awful. AI slop at least smells better. For those who did not grow up on a farm, the natural slop is remarkably similar to the stuff the NYC Department of Sanitation sprays on the streets in the summer. For all I know it’s the same.

I’ve been experimenting with AI, using public domain photos as a base. It’s really good and helpful when creating original artwork that I don’t have the talent to draw. And it’s especially good at touching up old halftone (newsprint) photos so 100 year old people look like they did 100 years ago. But I also find that I often have to use my human skills to perfect the image created by AI. For example, I don’t have the talent to draw a face or a car from thin air, but have tools to add shadows and verbiage (on cars and machinery, not faces) that AI can’t seem to master. Also, AI seems to add or subtract design elements without prompting. It is creating a drawing, not copying a photograph. Spitballing here…I wonder if AI purposely doesn’t fine tune art and drawings to avoid copyright and trademark violations. Finally, I don’t have an issue with using AI to create or embellish artwork, especially when the artist (the person talking to AI) makes it clear that the image was generated with AI. There is bad Photoshop and there is bad AI. But there is also good AI and it’s a useful tool.

Yes AI can edit with out prompts but it does it on everything not just on what you want it to. The same damn problem that has existed on modern systems. If I do a search I don’t want a search engine that gives me 300 million results because of a common word. And bragging about the most results is like saying my bean dip has 15 layers and includes pencil shavings and toe cheese. I prefer at most 10 results that are specific to my request. Even now if you put in the exact web address Google gives you 10 sponsors before you get the web address you entered.

Thanks for the deep dive into this. TBH I never really gave the top shot that much notice. To me it looked like the sort of amalgamation you often see in magazines back in the 80’s and 90’s. A pure cut and paste attention grabber. (Pre click-bait phrasing)

To all those raging over the picture, cut them some slack. They didn’t do it on purpose, and I don’t see your car e-zine anywhere.

That’s probably my fault! When I send articles off to Pete for editing, I sometimes give a little quip after I tag him in Slack. I try to keep things a little silly since I reckon we’re all a little stressed out.

For example, when I turn in an Autopian Asks, I just lay into the ‘A’ key. So Pete will get a tag with “AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA” in it. Then once he receives it, I’ll reply [Internal Screaming.]

For the coal-powered GM cars it was “Coal-dsmobile!” Or I’ll be serious. For the Sportswagon it was “Conversion van story is ready for AM departure!”

For the A-Class I was sort of tired, so the best I came up with was “Eh…Class.” Sorry, Pete!

To be honest, that top shot with the girl, truck, and smoke doesn’t land for me. It just looks weird. Why is the girl there? The proportions and relative positions are all wrong for the truck to be blowing smoke at her. And why isn’t she coughing?

That bothers me more than the AI (or lack thereof).

Personally, It bothers me because it looks like AI. I’ll assume nobody’s lying about it this time, but that truck looks like every other slop image that’s been regurgitated by AI.

All this effort to prove it’s not could’ve been completely avoided if someone had taken 10 seconds before posting it and asked, “Does this look a bit like AI slop?” Because the answer is yes.

This website and it’s readership is built on honesty, integrity, and transparency and those key values is why I am a paying member. This article literally is telling you this is not AI slop, but you are hung up on “it looks like AI so therefore it’s just as bad as if it were”. Bad Photoshop used to be the bane of the interwebs, but now should be lauded because someone actually took time to do the work (crappy or not).

That’s because morons who get so butthurt about “AI slop” forget that there can be regular old human made slop too. (The stock images, not Peter’s composition of them) Models in photos have been airbrushed to uncanny levels long before computers let alone generative AI.
Now people think everything that’s been airbrushed, has a soft focus, etc. is AI

I can’t speak for the guys, but I was about 2,000 words deep into something when I saw the original topshot idea and diverted my attention to it. I saw the black smoke more than anything else.

Later, I looked back at the image, realized that the SUV itself didn’t look right, and pointed it out. By that time it was a bit too late. It was a genuine mistake on our part. We have no reason to lie to you!

Chris D

It looks noticeably fake because a 2020’s-appearing SUV (with no back-up lights or brand/model symbols or text) would not use leaded gasoline.
When we did have leaded gas, the lead did not create plumes of smoke. The exhaust was foul and poisonous, but a cloud of smoke would result from an excessively rich gas/air mixture and/or burning oil.
Young ladies standing in a smoke cloud tend to not have an amused expression on their faces.
But thank you for the explanation.

Also, give Pete a break. He probably had a pretty limited amount of time to put this together. And that harsh deadline lead to the punishment of… Having to spend the time writing an explanation lol.

Remember when Photoshop got good enough that people felt the rug of physical existence had been freshly ripped from beneath them? Bayeux Tapestry Meme Farms remembers: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_yAdUICQZuA4/S8PCxA1HOEI/AAAAAAAABXc/vGhRSW96jPI/s1600/Thisbeashop.jpg

The ultimate skill level in film cgi is making the finished work look like nothing was done.
This is done more often than you’d think.
I can’t see the flaws even when the finish shot is identified for me. It could simply be issues with the hard film shoot, and reshooting isn’t an option.

I feel your pain.

We had our own little “It’s AI! You should hire humans!” fracas a while back with some hand-drawn art for a t-shirt. The art was a caricature of a Miata, and commenters took that as a sign that the AI didn’t get it right.
We had to post a time lapse video of our in-house graphic artist drawing the original in ink on paper, then scanning it for digitization. Thank goodness he took that time lapse!

Thanks for a look behind the scenes. While ideally you’d be manually airbrushing out all these defects by hand, I don’t think anyone would have a problem with this use case.

Also, good point that AI is not a standalone tech. We’ve been using productivity features for a long time to do things like photoshop and even spellcheck. I think it’s totally valid to say you’re not totally sure where the line should be drawn.
