I noticed my cat, Chester, was being even lordlier than usual this morning and now I know why. For the first time in a century there’s been a new member of the feline family discovered in the wild: Leopardus tilcayo, or the tilcayo tiger cat, or just the tilcayo.
In addition to explaining my cat’s exaggerated haughtiness, it’s also great news for carmakers. You know how many cars are named for cats? Basically, all of them. It may be a dog-eat-dog world out there, but when it comes to actually naming cars, marketers way prefer to give cars a feline moniker than a canine one.
It’s probably why all the good names for cats large and small have been used. In addition to the entire Jaguar brand, there’s the Cougar, Lynx, and Bobcat. Those are all just cat names for cars from the Mercury brand. If you weren’t running a Cobra in the ’60s you might be running a Cheetah, or maybe a Sunbeam Tiger. At the same time, no one would look down at you for showing up in a Buick Wildcat.
The one thing all these names have in common is that they’re all performance-oriented vehicles (ok, not every variant of the Lynx is sporty). There’s just something about the way a cat moves that screams fast automobile.
Meet The Tilcayo
The Tilcayo is a small wild cat species discovered by researcher Paola Nogales-Ascarrunz, who runs a Bolivian conservation program called Programa de Investigación de Félidos Bolivia that focuses on local felines. There’s a report from NBC News that has an interview with the scientist that explains how she found it:
Leopardus tilcayo might have continued to escape notice if not for Nogales-Ascarrunz’s sharp eyes. She volunteers at a wildlife rehabilitation center near La Paz called the Senda Verde Wildlife Sanctuary.
“I saw this cat. It was really, really small, and I couldn’t believe how small it was,” Nogales-Ascarrunz said. “I thought it was a kitten.”
The cat had been brought in by a man living in a community in the forest near La Paz who had mistaken the cat for a domestic kitten, according to details recorded by the sanctuary. He had fed the animal noodles, rice and eggs, only to realize it was wild and that he could not take care of it. So he brought it to the sanctuary.
Right off the bat, good on that guy for realizing it wasn’t just a house cat and taking it somewhere to be taken care of once he realized his mistake. I don’t blame him for taking in the kitten, as it’s smaller than a normal house cat and absolutely adorable. While some new species of cats are occasionally found, the report notes, it’s usually from doing a genetic analysis of already discovered animals. To find something entirely brand new that scientists weren’t aware of in the wild is extremely rare, and it seems this species broke off from other felines in the area some 1.4 million years ago.
The name for the cat is from a local indigenous language, and no one seems to know for sure exactly what it means. To me it means … car. There are some photos of it from National Geographic above, and more in the publication’s big feature on the discovery.
Who Should Claim The Tilcayo Name?

I think there are a lot of ways to go with this newly discovered member of our big earthly family. An obvious one would be a race car, as there seem to be a lot more new race cars than regular sports cars. Formula E was a good source of new car names, as you can see with the team DS Techeetah.
Mercury is probably history’s biggest fan of cat-based car names, so it’s a bummer the brand isn’t around anymore. Could Ford use this as an excuse to revive the company as a limited-run sports car maker? Probably not, though perhaps the rumored Mustang Raptor could be the Mustang Tilcayo?
China is coming out with new models every year, so maybe a Chinese brand? For some reason, Ora dropped the Funky Cat name, so it no longer deserves the honor. BYD loves naming its cars after animals (it has an entire Ocean Series with aquatic creature names) and is investing heavily in South America.
Whichever brand ends up claiming the name first, I do think it’s only right that they spend some money with local organizations to protect the habitat of this fine creature. While it’s unknown how many tilcayos there are, it’s almost certainly a creature at risk of extinction and in an area that’s already under pressure from development.
What do you think? What should the first tilcayo be?

If the cat stays small, then it should be a performance trim of an established hatch or city car. Ooo, the Kia EV4 X3 Tilcayo! Give it fancy wheels and skinny tires and an unnecessary wing on the back and performance numbers that actually aren’t that great are like slow car fast! 200 HP. 0-60 in just under 7 seconds. “Sport” mode that doesn’t actually do anything but make the steering wheel feel slightly tighter. Paddle shifters no one will ever use.
The Toyota Tilcayo because it rolls right off the tongue.
Probably Volkswagen or Porsche for some blobby SUV
Since this “new” cat has apparently been known to the local population for generations, just not the outside world, if someone does put the name on a car it should at least be a car specific to a certain region that the locals are used to, but no one else has heard of.
Bolivia?
If Ford wants to make a smaller Puma?
Yes, but ’tilcayo pants’ doesn’t really roll of the tongue. 😉
I’m trying to imagine cars named after dogs, and even though this is a topic covered on these very pages, I just can’t see it fit.
I know Greyhound is a car, but it’s also a bus. And Bulldog is what you’d name a car that has a hard time breathing and dies early.
Ford Golden Retriever?
Hyundai Chihuahua?
GM German Shepard?
Stellantis Poodle?
Kia Shih Tzu?
Ram Pit Bull?
Ok… maybe the last one works. And I’d have endless fun if there was actually a Kia Shih Tzu or Hyundai Chihuahua.
But for the most part, you just kinda want to tell a dog what a good boy they are, and I can’t see anyone doing that with their car.
Subaru Lab
I think Nissan could pull it off if they re-did their Pike cars:
Nissan Poodle – a small kei car that’s styled sort of like a Rolls Royce
Nissan Beagle – a super compact but bigger than kei 2 seater cheap roadster
Nissan Terrier – basically a Jimny
Nissan Pug – a super compact van
Especially with the look of the Pao!
There was the Aston Martin Bulldog.
Also:
AC Greyhound
Bedford Beagle
Hillman Husky
Colani Whippet
I own two chihuahuas. They are either lazy as hell or full of energy. Very little in-between. A Nissan Altima Chihuahua makes sense, as they’re either driven very sedately or like their tail is on fire.
The trail sport version of the Honda ridge line should be called the Ridgeback.
Isn’t that a Hog?
A ridgeback is definitely a dog. You might be thinking razorback, which is a feral hog.
Beater Altimas are the Chihuahuas of the car world. Unpredictable, loud, and psychotic
Remember when people wrapped cars/motorcycles in fur?
This guy does.
I remember Hoop, he had a lot of fur covered cars. Two that stood out were a Packard limousine with the driver outside ( technically a brougham or coupé or sedanca de ville, except that nobody knows because of all the cars with the driver indoors that are named that) and a BMW Isetta with a VW engine. In the Isetta the fur was the least of the craziness. It always wanted to pop wheelies. We got to know each other in the art car circuit. Nice guy.
This needs to go on a coupe. Like a Nissan Versa coupe. Nissan will say its the savior, it will be the next forgotten modern classic that will sell less than many hypercars.
Hellman’s Tilcayo: catnip flavored mayo.
Mmmmmm… delicious.
GM to revive the Asüna brand name to sell their newest subcompact SUV – the Asüna Tilcayo!
Bolivia’s own Quantum Motors, obviously:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_Motors
They could have a whole cat line of products: The Schrodinger, the Cheshire, Bodega, etc.
My car in college was often referred to as Schrodinger‘s car, because sometimes you had to push it because, you know, it was dead.
You’ll never know if its really dead till you look under the hood.
Logically it’s got to be a sporty Kei car, maybe Autozam Tilcayo?
In real life? I’m nominating a Chinese car company: Chery. Why? It’s the first Chinese car company that comes to my mind. I doubt a western brand would do it, and if one does, maybe Renault?
More likely video game related though, see Arch Duke Maxyenko’s response.
Why not Geely? They already did the Beauty Leopard, would fit the theme
Like I said, the first Chinese car company that comes to my mind is Chery! I don’t think about the Chinese auto market, so the fact I keep Chery loaded in my head is pretty amazing.
Porsche or Volkswagen
Ford should use their new “universal EV” platform to make a geo tracker/suzuki sidekick like mini suv that is super affordable and fun and call it the tilcayo.
Ford –
Because Puma, Kuga and Panther (platform)
And before Mustang was called Mustang, it was called Cougar.
And other animals generally – including Horses, Birds, a Canid (The Fox platform), a Bull, a Bear and a Weasel
They have a better chance if they kill people.
I’m changing my screen name to Tatra Tilcayo.
Small cat hiding in Bolivia ? Small Toyota for Latin America? But I guess a small GWM or Chery for Latin America works too. BYD can go find a new fish to name their small car for Latin America after.
Didn’t I just tell you to stop making up animals!
It should be VW. Tiguan, Taos, Touareg, Tilcayo, it just blends right in. VW is in the worst place it’s been in it’s entire history, only the name of a cat unknown until now can solve that.
If you told me that this was the name of a Brazilian market VW I would have totally believed you.
I kinda thought they named the cat after a Volkswagen.
100% I immediately thought VW because of the rest of those names.
Not just that, but VW has some small and nimble cars that could use better names (looking at you ID.3).
VW-branded Taycan variant
I read the article and immediately searched the comments for VW
Probably a DLC car in GTA6

You forgot charts!
Yes! I forgot charts.
Ford, it’s going to be a convertible Puma SUV
OR! It could be a replacement for the original Puma, since the current one morphed into a CUVish thing. Bring back the tiny 2 door sporty coupe as a Miata competitor.
Impossible.
It would theoretically, possibly, potentially, maybe, under certain circumstances, under a blue moon cut into Mustang sales and we can’t have that!
Only if the market was people who only buy Fords. And I mean Fords not any other company brand
Youabian to something here.
I’m definitely using it for one of my crappy Automation/BeamNG drive cars.
Something small and quick, of course.
