Advertising is just a daily part of life, from the websites you visit to the billboards on the side of the road. Sometimes, it’s pretty easy to ignore an ad, and sometimes, you can just pay to stop seeing ads. But companies have figured out ways to inject ads into everything, even pumping gas.
Jason wrote about how the crappy interfaces on gas pumps are actually great, because imperfections make life more interesting. Spikedlemon:
The audio for ads playing on fuel pumps needs to die.
Phil:
I don’t care how low-res the screen is. If it doesn’t blare those fucking ads at me the moment fuel starts flowing, it can have ten of them.
And before someone tells me to mute it, there are multiple gas stations in my area where there is no mute or volume function.
Gas pump TV advertisements have been around for at least two decades. Mechanical Pig gives a way to potentially mute these pumps:
You can see the heavily-worn unlabeled white buttons to the side of the display so presumably the photographed pump at least at some point would blare ads or “viral” videos at you prompting people to rage-mash all the buttons trying to shut it up. Usually one of those mutes audio, though I have run into some particularly evil ones that evidently had that mute function disabled.
Rad Barchetta:
Nothing about Blue Mustang (the actual name of the work) suggests travel or any of Denver’s rational sources of pride.
From what I understand, Denver has a horse-adjacent football team. Whether or not that’s rational or a source of pride is debatable, I suppose.

Jason wrote about how V8s used to mean cheap. Resident V10 devotee V10omous says:
“V8 still means cheap.”
-V10omous.
Rad Barchetta:
Also, I can’t talk about the Mercury 8 without noting its taillights, which were incredibly forward-thinking…
That’s an interesting thing to say about the lights on the back of a car.
Ranwhenparked:
I’m reminded of that low budget Canadian cruise line, Strand Cruises, who printed menus with “sausage in mustard sauce”, because they couldn’t bring themselves to just say hot dog.
Andy Individual:
Tube steak. It’s tube steak.

I wrote about the, uh, we’ll say, questionable sidecar camper for motorcycles. Cheap Bastard:
Is it March 32 already?
Eggsalad:

Have a great evening, everyone!

I still can’t get over “Strand Cruises.” When you’re in the mood for something fancier than “Flaming Crater Airlines” or “Twisted Metal Railways!”
Yeah, the fare is cheaper because they just leave you in the middle of nowhere rather than bringing you home. Hence the name.
Thanks, Mercedes!
I know someone famous!
sign in for comments is still fucked up guys
thank you. we’re working on that, and some other issues! Maybe I need to upgrade this thing to 32K?
There you go driving up the chip prices again.
thanks
Whoever decided to build this thing on WordPress shouldn’t be allowed within a mile of a computer.
How’s the process of migrating the site onto something more modern and performant going?
Do you know how hard it is to find an Amiga-compatible platform?
Sadly underrated platform for sure.
I wonder if Jason has set Griffin up with Video Toaster to create the IG reels.
But don’t bother to install more than 640K. Nobody will ever need more.
We’re in the era of 220GB programs.
I don’t think they could fathom that amount of storage without needing a separate building.
