It’s been fascinating watching German brands torpedo their images. BMW’s had some kidney problems for years, Volkswagen got rid of nearly all of its fun cars, and then there’s Mercedes-Benz. Oh boy, the company I named myself after is going through a time right now.
Thomas wrote about how, we’ll say, unfortunate the Mercedes GLA looks. Our readers were brutal! Angrycat Meowmeow:
The center console looks even cheaper than the screen blanking plate. “Here’s a piece of plastic with two holes for cups, I guess. IDK, get fucked.”
Anders:
We should congratulate MB in the achievement of creating something that is both frumpy and gaudy. It’s both incredibly dull and tasteless at the same time. Hats off!

The Mercedes GLA Looks Terrible
Fixed it for you.
Vert1go749 is just as annoyed with these window switches as I am:
Mercedes-Benz has gone with Volkswagen ID.4-style window switches on the new GLA, with two switches and a touch pad operating four windows.
I have no shame declaring that this is the hill I choose to die on. Of all the terrible UX decisions, I will stand in the rain holding a picket sign outside of your brand headquarters if I need to get my point across that I will never pay money for a vehicle that adopts this approach to window switches.
Ottomottopean:
Yo dawg, I heard you like three pointed stars…
El Jefe de Barbacoa:
*Scratches neck feverishly* Yo dawg, you got any more of them emblems?
Data found the easy way to a COTD nom:
Mercedes, once classy now trashy (The car, not The Autopian’s wordsmith for Planes, trains, and automobiles).
David wrote about the great benefits of becoming an Autopian Member. Mechjaz makes a good point. Where are the clams, Jason?:
I’m a member, but I want to take this opportunity to say I’m really disappointed in the lack of content for and about clams lately. Maybe, if you’re generous, stain-o-flage can resist clam chowder, but it’s not even explicitly called out.
You’ll talk intake valves and burned valves and bent valves and exhaust valves all day. But, I ask you, as a member and concerned citizen, what about the bivalves?
Jason wrote about Beau’s weird George Barris VW creation, and if you didn’t read it, you missed a classic Jason-ism. Ben:
I seem to have made up Beau’s orbiting steakhouse, which I had been calling the International Steak Station.
Lines like this are why I always click on Torch articles.
Mercedes is a lifelong fan of all things powered by an engine. When she isn't driving one of her five Smart Fortwos or her 14 other vehicles she could be found in the cockpit of a Cessna 172 or perhaps swimming in any body of water that she could find. She also has a deep love for buses of all kinds. Please send her buses.
